Basic Stereo Question

I just set up my new AV system Xmas day. I have a Denon 1312 amp with Polk 30 Monitors on the front, a Polk RM8 on the center channel and Polk RM6751's on the rear -- along with a Polk PSW10 subwoofer. I'm very satisfied with the sound and performance when playing Blu Ray movies. I just watched Master and Commander and when the cannons went off the whole house shook!

I was just curious about the audio when playing music cd's through my Samsung Blu Ray player. I purchased two new cd's and on one of them no sound comes out of the center channel speaker. Can anyone explain why? Also, when viewing movies via AT&T U-verse, on the TV, will the center channel speaker be active? Thanks...

Because a cd is stereo, 2 channel.
PLaying movies on the cable box requires you to set the cable box to surround in the audio setup menu on the ATT box. You also need to have it hooked up to the avr, or a digital cable from the tv to the avr, depending on how you have things hooked up.

For two channels sources ie. cd, tape , turntable and tuner you will have to use one of the prologic modes like PLIIx. If you apple TV has a Digital output, it will depend on what you are watching. Read the manual it will tell you about all of the settings and how and when to use each one. Best of luck. If you have any other question just ask away. Also, if your cable box or source has a Digital Out and can output 5.1 you should hook up a "digital" cable from the source to the Denon AVR or regular HDMI should do it as well (you may have to go into the sound menus on the source to choose this option?). The Denon will then default to Dolby formats if the broadcast is available in that format.

Otherwise, the dude is correct, you have to choose Dolby surround from the menu so that the Denon will matrix the sound as 5.1 or higher!

Well I live a few miles from the e-way, and I'm always telling them to go play in traffic. And when the oldest says "I'm gonna kill you!" I promptly grab a knife and say here you go. So I guess I encourage it. LOL
