I have really been into Jazz as of late. Any of you Jazz lovers have a short list of must have albums I should look at getting my hands on?

I have all of Sade and Diana Krall and most of Spyro Gyra, I also have most of Steve Oliver.

Help me spend some money!!!

If you are a fan of late night radio, the Red Eye Radio show is it. Doug McIntyre was the host but he has moved to L.A morning show. Here's a list of the bumper music he used. Mostly old type jazz but still classic stuff. http://redeyeradio.com/playlist.php

I went on a similar path and have ended up accumulating a small jazz collection - but when you say are leaning more towards 'smooth/modern jazz' or do you also interested in 'traditional' jazz?

Just ordered a couple of The Rippingtons and was happy to see that Steve Oliver has played on a couple of albums with them. Looks like Steve Reid helped him out in his early years. If any of you guys have not put your ears to Steve Oliver pick up his Live CD/DVD combo pack, I have them all but after seeing him play live the live CD gets the most play as it takes me back to that night. They are all good.

Also picked up some David Sanborn and Fourplay. Well I ordered all of these and will be looking forward to getting them.

Halo I will look into Candy Dulfer.

    Thanks again guys!

That's cool...I started with that as my first 'toe in the water'.

    You might like these:
Chris Botti - Night Sessions (trumpet)
Jeff Golub - Out of the Blue (the title track is got a killer guitar groove)
    Jeff Lorber - Flipside

I also found some really cool Smooth Jazz sampler CDs- a good way to try out different artists:
Smooth Jazz Volume 13, WJJZ 97.5FM
    Smooth Jazz Number Ones
    Smooth Jazz Hits
    Best of Smooth Jazz Guitar

An original, SDA SRS demo disc chosen by Polk Audio for its sharp attacks... and a fairly solid CD to boot.

Classic, Golden Era, must-owns favs of mine (that also make many top lists):
    Time Out - Dave Brubeck
Getz/ Gilberto - Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto (think "Girl from Ipanema", but even better...)
Concert by the Sea -Errol Garner

Classic, Golden Era, must-owns that make many top lists that I just got for Christmas:
The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961 - Bill Evans
Monk's Dream - The Thelonius Monk Quartet

More contemporary favs that make many lists:
Black Codes (From the Underground) - Wynton Marsalis (although I own more of his classical recordings)
Return to Forever - Chick Corea
Crystal Silence - Chick Corea/ Gary Burton
Deep in the Shed - Marcus Roberts

Favs that may push the purists' definition of jazz:
The Inner Mounting Flame - John McLaughlin & The Mahavishnu Orchestra
Birds of Fire - John McLaughlin & The Mahavishnu Orchestra
Bela Fleck & The Flecktones - Bela Fleck & the Flecktones
Three Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest - Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

... and don't forget the classic lady jazz singers, e.g., Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone and Ruth Brown, the latter being a personal fav. All have Best of... collections worth checking out.

"Jazz" is a nebulous term IMO. I can't stand the discordant sqeaks & squawks of some jazz, to me, that ain't music. I love the original Dixieland stuff (Dukes of Dixieland) and what I consider great "jazz" is later stuff by Steely Dan or Donald Fagen solo. S.Winwood and Traffic did some jazzy sounding work back in the day.

Don't miss an absolute treat -
the 2008 Japanese-remastered "Astral Weeks" by Van Morrison.

The instrumentals are so much clearer than in the original (I have both so I know!)

A less than obvious album is Errol Garner's Concert by the Sea. It is old, is just a piano and voice but is recorded down by the waterfront with a live audience. As you sit and listen if you relax and just keep listening, you will find yourself feeling like you are right in the middle of the audience down by the sea listening to an old jazz master. It's not a "hear this crazy jazz" album, it's more of a sit down by yourself and immerse into the soundstage which expands from track to track. It takes a careful ear to hear it, but for me is one of the most incredible SDA albums I've ever had but it really is extremely subtle. You won't hear it initially but it's there. And it grows.

For more impressive jazz, Spyro Gyra, Chick Corea, Dave Brubeck, and that type of jazz is what I like. But you can really get into deep moods with Miles Davis. There is so much jazz in the genre catalog you can spend the rest of your life expanding your realm. I may not have as much appreciation for the genre except I took an African American music history class and re-discovered many great artists in Jazz as well as blues. There are many classics that aren't produced anymore. You might find some good stuff at a local library or school library if you are lucky.

My favorite band that I like to play in order to impress guests quickly to my modded SDA system is a local favorite (they are on Pandora though) a Latin Caribbean funk jazz band called "Spam Allstars". It's crazy good whether loud or even lower in the background. At some point it's guaranteed that someone will ask, "who is this band?"
