I need a pre

I had an anthem Pre2L but sold it recently. I've been using a Sumo Diana SS pre but am selling that as well (It's sold as of next Monday). I'm without a pre while I upgrade the XO's in the 2.3TL's and looking for advice on something to pair with my Anthem Amp 1 so that I'm ready to go when I get the XO's done. I think I'm leaning towards solid state because I like to retain a bit more detail in the highs than what I was getting with a tubed pre and pro combo.

There is one of these pre's for sale locally here for $1600. If only I had the cash.

Cambridge-Audio 840E. I love mine, and this is a great price for new. However, it makes me think they are clearing out stock for the next generation.

Have you thought about a tube pre/ss amp combo? A more powerful ss amp might do the big sda's more justice. Just a thought.

Not speaking from experience but based on everything I've read, this will be my next preamp. -
I love this forum! You guys already have me grabbing my wallet with two hands. I guess I did forget to put a price limit and will probably will buy used. That has always worked out well and allowed for switching gear without losing too much investment. I did consider going tube pre and SS amp but I really do like the Anthem. It has a beautiful rich soundstage and plenty of power. I'll know better once I get the XO's done and can really test drive them. For comparison, I'll swap in a Parasound HCA-1200 SS amp so that I know for sure which I like better.
For starters, how about a $500 budget?
As a side note, I was looking somewhat seriously at the B&K Ref50 for sale on the forum as a possibility....I had a Ref20 previously and liked it quite well.____________________________________________________________

I have a hca 1200, I've had my ears on many pre's on that amp. The best I've heard for that budget I bought! The dared sl2000a just upgrade the tubes . I've had the b&k 20 and 30, both very nice but the dared killed them! That just my experience.Main Rig:
Krell KAV 250a biamped to mid/highs

This would play nice with the Anthem...and is high on the Cool Factor

I will second the Cambridge Audio 840E, I recently purchased one from Audio Advisor at the sale price, big improvement in my system. I should mention though that I was previously using a Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH as my 2-channel pre and home theather processor - so I really don't know how the 840E would stack up againest another dedicated 2-channel pre.2-Channel System

Which tubes did you use in the Pre2L ??
