My current 5.1 setup in the basement...
Receiver - Sony STR-DG1000 7.1
Sub - PSW10
Center - CS1
Fronts - Monitor 70's
Side surrounds - Monitor 30's
Rear surrounds - ??? no speakers yet

My current setup upstairs...
Receiver - Sony STR-DH100 - 2 channel
Speakers - ??? no speakers yet

What I am trying to do is buy a pair of decent bookshelf speakers for $100-$150 that I can use upstairs to listen to vinyl and keep my 5.1 setup in the basement. However, I may at some point take the upstairs speakers to the basement to complete the 7.1 system.

I was looking at the RM8's or just another pair of Monitor 30's. Any other recommendations????

Thank you!

That's perfect vintage polk territory there, except for the part about moving them into the home theater later. But if you want to rock the two-channel scene for a while, the monitor 7 or 10 would sound great and work within your stated budget. The Polk RT7 and RT55(i) are also available in that range.

Move up the funds a bit and you can get new speakers, like the Mordaunt-Short Carnival 2 for instance, and those could be moved into a modern home theater and not look out of place.

    Two Channel Setup:

    Speakers: Wharfedale Opus 2-3
    Integrated Amp: Krell S-300i
    DAC: Arcam irDac
    Source: iMac
    Remote Control: iPad Mini

    3.2 Home Theater Setup:

    Fronts: Klipsch RP-160M
    Center: Klipsch RP-160M
    Subwoofer: SVS PB12NSD (X 2)
    AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2030
    Blu Ray: Sony BDP-S790

I am somewhat new to the speaker game, but I think the monitors I have are a modern version of the vintage monitor series. I am looking for something that would work well with the newer series. May be able to spend up to $200.

Would the RM8 satellites work well on their own? Would they also work as rear surrounds with my current basement system?

    Thanks,

Well, another option would be to buy another pair of Monitor 30s and use them as fronts in your home theater for awhile. The Monitor 70s could go upstairs and sound pretty darned good as your two-channel speakers until you decide to move them back into the home theater. That would solve your problem and make your budget happy.

Vinyl. Bookshelves? Go vintage Polk...try to find some Monitor 5s or 7s if you want a full Low end! Easily within your price range if you can find them and they love playing vinyl! Actually most good vintage speakers are good with vinyl.

My vinyl system is nothing to brag about, a simple Technics TT, a vintage Marantz receiver and a pair of KLH 17s. But once those KLHs start to sing it "does not" matter what else is going on, they're pretty sweet! No need to blow a wad on an Engineering project TT with Aerospace technology, IMO.

Check out the flea market or look on your local CL! You won't regret it!

Ah shoot. You guys are probably right. I am now searching for vintage polks to go upstairs.

Any recommendations for rear surrounds for my home theater set-up?

    Room size is about 15x25.

I've had the M70's for about a year and love them. I just got the rest of the system on black friday and am in the process of hooking everything up. I guess I just assumed that the more speakers the better, but maybe I'll just see how the 5.1 sounds in my space. Thanks for the advice.

What should I pay for a solid pair of 7's?
