Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 ? December 4, 1993) was an American composer, electric guitarist, record producer and film director. In a career spanning more than 30*years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, electronic, orchestral, and musique concrete works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60*albums he released with the band Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist.

An amazing artist - his significance as a composer and as a guitarist isn't well understood by many folks whose knowledge of all things Zappa doesn't go much past Nanook Rubs It.
My son, the mathematics PhD candidate*, is a big FZ fan (appropos of CNH's comment about FZ fans in another, recent thread).

*--Zappa is an acquired taste, but there's no doubt he was fairly talented. What I've always found interesting is that the biggest Zappa fans I know have always been science geeks with a penchant for math and logic (actually, they're very bright but tend to be overly rational). Not really a negative or positive just an observation.
