I am in the process of recapping my Sony X33 es CD player. For the most part this player is built around the Elna Durex II caps. In the power supply it has 2 plain black Elna caps that have 3 legs. The legs are marked on the rubber pad of the cap +, - and NC is on the 3rd leg. The pad that the NC leg goes through on the board goes nowhere connects to no traces. IIRC the value is 4700uf and i believe 63 V. There are I believe 5 caps in this section and only the two black Elna's have this 3rd leg. The others are 1 brown Elna and 1 black Nichicon and 1 other i can't recall at the moment. I bought all Nichicon FG or muse depending on value and from what I was told they are more bullet proof. The rest of the caps on the board will be Elna simlac II.

I called Digikey and talked to a tech and after talking to a couple of other techs the consensus was the NC meant "no connection"

I am all ears here help me get my learn on.

I thought they used three leg for extreme service applications. Kind of like a tether for the cap and its weight. I believe it is also used to bar the effect of resonance on the cap.

NC usually means No Connection from the limited knowledge I have.

The 3rd leg is just for support on large, heavy caps. You can replace them with the same type of caps, or just use two leg caps and use some glue to hold the cap.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...
