Trying to edit a Windows file (wmv)

I converted a dvd to wmv format and need to edit the file to display portions in a webinar. The video must be wmv format that is inserted into a Power Point slide for attendees to see/hear the video in the webinar.
When I play the video using Windows Media Player the complete movie is there but when using Windows Movie Maker the audio/video will freeze to a black screen even though the time counter is still advancing. This happens in random time frames into the video. What's causing this or maybe even better yet, is there a better (but free) video editor for wmv files?
