Am I making a mistake purchasing a subwoofer?
Folks, I have already purchased a pair of cherry RTi70s for the fronts, and a pair of cherry RTi38s which will be mounted on 36" stands for the rears. For now, this is an [audio] only setup.
These speakers are going to be powered with my old 2 channel Pioneer Spec 1 pre-amp and Spec 4 power-amp (150w/channel)
I think this will be a nice sounding setup as is.
But .... I also purchased a Rava powered subwoofer.
I have heard that with this setup, if used for audio only, that the sub is not really needed.
I was just wondering if I made a mistake buying the Rava. Or, will it maybe compliment the 4 Polk speakers and maybe make the system sound a little better (under normal listening levels). I can't set this system up right now since the new speakers are in Phoenix, and I am still in Alabama for 5 more weeks.
Thanks,
Ron
P.S. Some folks have said, I really only need the 2 front speakers, but, from listening to it before (with different speakers), I liked the sound with the 4 speakers hooked up better. It just sounded more "spacious" to my un-trained ears than just 2 fronts.

Thanks guys ...
One more question from an audio iliterate.
Since I am using all 5 of these speakers, would I have been just as well to use the smaller RTi28s for the rears instead of the larger RTi38s? I think the 28s would fit a little better on the stands since they are smaller, but of course overall sound is more important than the way they set on the stands.
Thanks again ....2-Channel Audio

Both of those speakers are great bookshelves. I prefer the RTi38 personally, it has more depth and tone, but you can't really lose here. Good luck.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

RAVA = very nice sub for music applications.
Edit:
Thanks, Russ. I had modern BM on the brain.
The RAVA should supplement the bottom end of the 70's nicely. The 70's are flat to about 42-43 Hz in-room. I would filter at the RAVA at about 45-50 Hz for a music application.

Re-do your post Doc.
He has a vintage Pioneer Spec setup, 2ch, but can run 4 speakers. He is going to have use a second set of pre-outs on his preamp - and filter at the Rava.
