for cd quality maybe for HI-res audio uh uh. I recently ripped a mixed DVDA that I have had for a while, but never got the full advantage of hearing. I used DVD audio extractor to rip the disc twice. First time through I did a direct conversion to flac, with no volume leveling or any other type of voodo. Second time I just ripped the mlp files right to the drive. No the difference is not so much in the quality, but in the dynamics. The flac files sound louder with soft passages. And the slow build up in some songs comes on way to fast. The mlp(no conversion straight DVDA files) play the soft stuff nice and soft and the build up is more gradual. Both peak at the same level, I think flac just does not have the same dynamic range as mlp. The best way to describe it would be to say flac has or has near the resolution of DVDA(when encoded from that source), but has the dynamic range of a cd. I can understand the use of flac though for instance George Thorogood's Bad to the Bone in flac format is right around 82M for the file where the original mlp is just over 206M. The differences I experienced are on my laptop (native 24/192) through a B&K pro 10 mc (running passive) into a Parasound HCA 1000A feeding a pair of SDA 2As. When I get a new DVDA/SACD player, I will compare the DVDA to the laptop. As of right now the laptop is the best source I have.

FLAC files can run at 24/192 as well. Perhaps you're not ripping the DVDA to flac at high enough resolution to get the full dynamic range of the MLP's. Your smaller size flac files says that I'm likely correct. I've had tremendous success with high resolution flac conversions, very dynamic with huge wide and 3 dimensional soundstages with the right source material.

The Flac files have a huge soundstage, going back to the source is just more dynamic. The ripper/encoder will only encode up to 24/96. But I should still have the dynamic range, just half the resolution.

How does this work when you rip stereo and 6 channel?does it downsize the dvda to 2 channel or what?
and how could i play back 6 channel from a computer? with a sound card that does that?
