Yes, I did, and I came away with some pretty nice stuff, too!!

It was our office holiday party and we did one of those gift exchanges where you draw a number, and when it's your turn, you can either choose a gift from the table or steal something that somebody else had already acquired! :loneranger:

In all fairness, though, I didn't steal anything until some nasty woman  in an ugly Christmas sweater stole some holiday-themed Tupperware containers from me - then it was on!

Got me a cool set of four LED flashlights!

In my old workplace (it's been 16 years), that "stealing" part could have caused a riff for years to come. I hope your workplace is saner.

The way most workplaces are today, I'm surprised your manager and/or HR department allowed it.

Was any of the stuff you stole on a spool, by chance?

I've heard of that kind of party. I've never had a chance to play but I can imagine the poor people with no sense of humor. That is one messed up game. I like the secret santa style party better. I never played that either but I've of both over the years.

I'm glad you enjoyed your play in the game. Cool tools. Yes , I consider a flash light a tool in a way.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Many workplaces still do Christmas parties. Many more so than not. My wifes office had a nice raffle of LCD TV's, IPADS, IPODs, Cameras, and a host of goodies of stuff that people actualy want. Of coarse they haven't had a raise in 3 years so I think the company figured they better fork out something.

Well Mike, the company got the stuff from a store run by a former employee who said they could have it. Not like they stole it or anything, the guy said they could have it.

Seriously, no raise in 3 yrs and they trashed any and all bonuses.....except for the executives that is. Which is a big hit for me since the wifes bonus was in the 5 figure range. Interesting enough, they payed out a bonus for doubling the profit from the year before. They doubled that again this year and received zip. My wife is just under executive status but those under her received zip in 3 years. Then this companies execs want a plan on how to keep people in their seats and not lose any top performers. Hello....pay them stupid.

I first played this game 3/4 years ago with Jes's family, and I've had a GREAT time playing it. It can be a lot of fun, of course we try and use our couple power to get what we want. Didn't work out so well last year, I came away with a four pack of crappy flashlights, her brother got the one I wanted, the tripod LED flashlight. Much fun.

Ahh.. the White Elephant gift exchange.

At my last employer I stole a really cool Looney Tunes clock from someone. Don't think they ever got over it. IIRC the rule was the gift could only be touched three times. The third person to touch it, kept it and no one else could steal it after that.

Yes, it was a good time. Some of the "thefts" were vociferously protested! The rules allowed for only two steals per item. The second person to steal was allowed to keep the item for good. It was only $10 items, but you would have thought that some items cost 10x that amount, the way people got worked up about them!

EDIT: Yes, pdxfj, that's what I was trying to say!

Man, I got stuck in one of those parties at my last job.

I drew a number and got a pretty sweet deal. Two tickets to a Flyer's game!

I said "Oh! Cool!" and promptly put them back down on the table where the gifts were and went and sat back down.

Everyone looked astonished. Then one of the old bitties said "Why did you do that?"

I said "That's probably the sweetest gift in the pile and someone is just going to "steal" it from me anyway. Since I'm not allowed to beat the thief's ****, I'm not even going to bother holding on to them."

Then someone got a rubber, reusable wine cork set. All the gifts were doled out and it came time to "steal". The dude with the wine corks comes to me and says "So uhh...did you like not want those Flyer's tickets?" I said "Yeah, I would love to use them and go with a friend of mine." He says "Oh...well...uhhhhh....hmmmmm....I want them too so I guess I'm stealing them! Here." He shoves the wine corks in my chest, I didn't grab them and they plummet to the floor while he gleefully snatches the tickets and runs off. I don't even drink wine.

I got yelled at for my "poor attitude".

The next year, I didn't want to participate but my manager said it'd be good for team building. I relinquished and I got a crystal candy dish. Didn't really want it but figured I could give it to my mom. Then someone stole that from me and I ended up with women's holiday socks. Talk about getting screwed. The person who stole it from me? That was the gift she bought and she really wanted it so she took it back and gave me the socks. Someone pointed that out to her and she stopped and said "So? It's in the rules, I can "steal" any gift!" Flabbergasted in disbelief at the idiocy I'm being put through, I let out a profane exclamation. I know! It's so unlike me but believe it or not, it actually happened! It was followed by further profane descriptions of the socks. In frustration and mid expletive laced rant, I chucked the socks in the direction of the break room trash bin and the little plastic hanger caught my shirt sleeve which skewed it's trajectory. It headed right for the candy dish lady and she freaked. Dropped her candy dish in a knee-jerk reaction and it shattered on the floor.

I laughed like a hyena for 20 minutes.

    She took the socks.

I was told I wasn't allowed to participate anymore.

You'd think I'd be upset but I was oddly relieved.

I always found those kinds of parties to be unsporting and really not in line with the ideals behind the season or gift giving in general.

Oh, our limit was $20 and this was like 10 years ago now. The Flyer's tickets were nosebleed and like $8 a piece so $16 in total and under the limit.

My parents are odd. Collectors if you will. My first WEP that I went to with my now wife, I asked my parents if they had anything cool I could bring. They literally sent me there with a half-balding stuffed linx. Keeping in mind, their version of the party was not to get stuck with the most horrendous thing ever (not to actually get stuff people would want)

People were fighting over my gift because it was that scary. I ended up getting a MN Wild DVD of some sort. Can't complain there

Edit: And I do mean stuffed linx. Like it was taxidermied 20 years ago and needed to be redone. It was 2 feet high, and 3 feet long standing on a "rock"

Sounds like a good script for the opening scene of an Adam Sandler Christmas comedy... I don't know why I was picturing Sandler playing Jstas, but I was. In a Christmas movie, no less.
