I'm looking for recommendations for some good jazz piano. I recently picked up the Charlie Brown Christmas by the Vince Guaraldi Trio and was wondering if any of you guys could point me towards some new artists. Instrumental, with vocals, male/female doesn't matter. I'm looking to broaden my horizons and this style has caught my ear.

Thanks!

    Old School or contemporary?

If the former: Erroll Garner, Bill Evans (Trio), Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Thelonius Monk, McCoy Tyner...

For the latter: Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Roberts, Joe Sample...

Groupings in no particular order and lists are just the tip of the iceberg...
    More later,
    Tour...

Dforman and Tour2ma, thanks for the suggestions! As for the old school vs. contemporary...we'll see. I'll have to listen to them to see what I like. I just very recently came to like this genre.

Another vote for Bill Evans - wonderful jazz piano - try "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" or "Portrait in Jazz".

For more modern type jazz - you may want to sample some Jeff Lorber, "Flipside" - bigger sound, more diverse jazz with more instruments but still enjoyable.

If you looking for a more modern Bill Evans, try Brad Mehldau, probably my favorite jazz trio old or new. The things that he can do with a very simple melody are astounding. He also grooves like no other jazz pianist I know of. And to top it off, he has great covers of Radiohead, Nick Drake, etc. If you like Vince Guaraldi then you probably like melodies that you can actually follow, and if that is the case he is a great one to start with.

For something different, you might look into the bad plus. Kind of a rock jazz trio. Sometimes they get a little too experimental for me (or just too loud), but man a lot of there stuff is outstanding. They also include lots of cool covers.

There are some good suggestions there. I'll add Keith Jarrett.

I was on Amazon last nite fleshing out my wish list for some folks who want to buy me things for some reason, when Amazon started suggesting stuff "I might like" as it is prone to do...

    Such as...

    61prnekxfzL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Hadn't realized Evans' complete Vanguard sessions were together and remastered in one package, or that Getz had recorded with the OP3...

Once I Wish-Listed the Getz/ OP3, suggestions swung to sax men... fun evening.

Could be a very good Christmas... but if not, it'll be a great New Year...
