After reading a lot about how a power amplifier helps the listening experience of RTi 12, I got interested in buying one and finally the occasion came, I got a luxman m-03 used from a friend. This is the european equivalent of luxman m-117 in america. It is 200 wpc at 8 ohm with less than 0.03 THD and a very good damping factor. It weighs a lot (23 kg) and is 2 ohm stable. This should be enough to appreciate the low end of rti 12. I was driving them with a luxman receiver rated at 100 wpc (it is obviously less than that, but still a good solid receiver) With this upgrade I decided it should be possible to drive rti 12 at full range and changed the crossover settings accordingly.

First off I noticed that the overall volume of the speakers has greatly increased. I had to tone down the level by several notches in order to ensure even levels with center and surround speakers. Secondly I could appreciate higher volumes before distortion happened. Thirdly, I think I can hear better bass at low and normal listening level, compared to the previous setup, however this can be placebo effect or the result of different crossover settings. I am moderately satisfied although I could not notice the day and night difference that many have claimed. This might also be evidence that the receiver was driving them very well with the help of crossover.

I think it will take some time of listening to appreciate other details. I could run A/B tests but I couldnt be bothered with switching so-many-a-cable. Will post further comments in the future and of course I will be glad to read other people's

No surprises here, in my opinion.

Its my position that "Day and Night" is a very subjective description for any amount of variation from one experience to the next.
Do you hear that buzzing noise?

You did go from one Luxman to another and so the sonic signatures are probably very close.

Another brand might have provided a bigger difference you were expecting.

one a different note, the two luxman are from different decades, one is a home theatre unit another is a high fi unit, the power amp has duo beta circuits which the receiver lacks... I am not sure they are that close as far as sonic signature goes

you jumped from 100 to 200WPC. The speaker can handle around 500w or so. add more power and you will see. I jumped from 100 to 300 WPC (HK Signature 2.1 to Citation 5.1). the difference is huge, subwoofer is no longer needed for music.
