This is a continuation of the reintroduction of analog playback into my system. My initial goal was play the 400ish LPs I had from my past analog life. Little did I know this would turn into an obsession.

After completing the first plinth as a direct replacement for a VPI ?Scout? TT configuration, I planned to make one which would be more adaptable to accommodate different tonearms via a removable armboard. This is based on the VPI Aries as the drive components from this series will be used. The first stage of the build is now complete. The maple facing has been added and now I need to hand sand the surfaces and perform the final contouring.

I haven?t decided if this will be a keeper or if the I will continue to use the current plinth from the below post. I guess if I have concrete plans on acquiring a different tonearm I will keep the new plinth and sell the existing one. The platter and drive components will be kept regardless of the final decision. The finish for the plinth has yet to be determined?

Just a suggestion, but if you're going to do this, why not go with a plinth based on the Aries Extended? That would let you run 12" tone arms as well.

This design should accept any 9" to 12" tonearms available by using different length armboards so there is no need to have a bigger plinth. The plinth + drive combination will be wider than I would like so this was another reason to not have the extended plinth.

Nice work, beautiful wood. Are you thinking of staining or perhaps a Tung oil finish? What arms are you considering?

I had a nice piece of 'birds eye' maple I found in the regular stock at the lumber store. After resawing, the jointer and thickness planer made too many tear-outs regardless of feed direction for it to be used. I don’t want to be adding any filler to the finished surface especially if it will be stained to highlight the grain. I am trying to use this as justification for adding a 16” drum sander to the collection ...

My thoughts are to use either an ebony dye stain or India ink along with Deft Black Walnut Danish Oil. I may add more varnish to the Danish Oil as well for better protection. If I find another stain color, I would use a neutral Danish Oil. I have lots of little pieces to experiment with while it’s being sanded.

I could also spray black lacquer followed by two coats of satin super clear polyurethane in the spring once it warms up.

    Not sure at this point.

The plinth has been shaped to the contour I like with a bevel edge top and bottom. The medium grit sanding is done so I am progressing through the finer grits in preperation for finishing. Still need to make several armboards for the plinth as I only have the template at this point.

Had another maple project requiring planing. One direction created tear-outs in some boards; changing direction created tear-outs in other boards. This will not do.

I ordered a drum sander as I am tired of trying to fix items after issues. This should be arriving sometime in the next couple of weeks.
