top secret really expensive drone and can't regain the link to it. Wouldn't you have programmed it to find a place in friendly territory to land, versus just finding a place to land that might be in unfriendly territory? I mean at several million $'s each I'm guessing they had a GPS onboard  And if it couldn't make it to friendly territory, wouldn't you have a mechanism for it to destroy itself?

That's kinda where I'm coming from. Isn't it designed to SPY on people and by default don't you SPY in ENEMY territory? Seems to me the most casual observer would have programmed it to Phone Home in the event of lost connection. This whole situation seems like a little on the bait side as opposed to a lost connection. Or maybe it's Obama's way of starting controversy at the CIA and the beginning of the end for them as well as our bases...? HmmmWas there not an Awacs in the air anywhere on the planet that could have taken control if this little guy or what? Might I quote a line from Sum of All Fears? This is too much GD B.S ...and not enough fact!
    Too much **** to list....

Shouldn't they keep a 12 year old kid on hand to regain control and get it back on course ?? :-)

That's funny right there. I agree with all the above. Self destuct, plan B return program and then the Let's start the tensions up real good before we leave that area of the world. Maybe they need to stay just a another year or 5 more.

The crasy stuff that happens anymore is just dumbfounding, Kid raising his hand before a touch down is a penalty...Good grief.

I hope we hear why that drone didn't return on its own someday!!
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Don't drones fly at high altitudes? That drone is humongous. I would think it would be flying at a very high altitude to avoid visual detection from the ground. If so, how is it displayed on Iranian TV in one piece? Heck, even if it dropped from 100 feet, wouldn't it pretty much disintegrate on impact?

On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if someone screwed up and it automatically landed at the Iranian international airport.

What's going to be interesting is when all of the Iranian biggies get together for a photo/propaganda picture, for some reason the drone goes BOOM.

More information from a FOX news article:

Once contact with the operators is broken, drones such as the RQ170 are programmed to circle an area until contact is re-established, sources said. If contact is not re-established during a pre-programmed period, it is designed to return to base or to self-destruct -- directed through a separate channel or program. A common outcome is that the drone crashes and is burned by its fuel.

Most concerning to investigators is that none of these steps occurred.

I like the comment on Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me! about the drone this week. Something to the effect of:
Wait a minute, they lost the communication link with the drone? What, are they using AT&T as their carrier?

EDIT: Heh, here's the transcript, in the interest of accuracy.

    http://www.npr.org/2011/12/10/143466820/whos-carl-this-time
SAGAL: Here is your next quote.

KASELL: They lost service with the drone? Is the Defense Department using bleeping AT&T?

    (SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: That was a commenter at the New York magazine blog, obviously upset that the Pentagon lost a drone, where?

    SHAFFER: Iran.

    SAGAL: Iran, yes, very good.

    (SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

    (SOUNDBITE OF APPLAUSE)
