When I got the Amazings, told the ex I was getting them and told her not to get me anything for Christmas or a birthday or anything, these were just fine. Some arguing ensued and I got them anyway. When I brought the obelisks home and had them warming up next to the heater vent, she came home and flipped because she didn't think they were that big. I said "What did you think I meant by the statement "They are as tall as me so I have to go pick them up."?"
I didn't have much room for them so they were stored for a little bit until I got a bigger place. Glad she wasn't around for Adcom GFP-750 pre-amp and the Silver 7t purchases otherwise she would have flipped her lid because I spent money on something that wasn't her.
I'm glad she's gone. The new GF has no problem with it. Thinks it's insane and has what she thinks are better ideas on how to spend money but says "It's your money, do what you want as long as your bills are paid."Expert Moron Extraordinaire

When my wife gets annoyed by my latest stereo equipment purchase (usually well-used and cheap) I just say something like:
"Some husbands beat their wives, some fool around with other women (or with men), some don't work, some are lazy, some don't bathe, some ignore the kids, some drink, some take drugs, some gamble, some are addicted to **** or sports, some run out on their responsibilities....you just got stuck with one that likes to sit in the basement in the evening and listen to music on old stereo equipment.....so life is unfair."Norh ACA-2B tube pre, Sumo Andromeda SS amp. Wifie no likie my Maggies. As Jstas said, I told her they were the size of the front door, and twice as heavy. She was fine with them for about a nanosecond, and also said she did not think they would be so big. Now that they have been broken down for repairs, she really hates them. I did also tell her that after testing and any repair, they would go in their boxes until we had a house.:loneranger:The Gear... My wife started crying when I brought a pair of Mirage M3 in the house. Of course, she was quite hormonal at the time being about 8 months pregnant. Probably not the best time to bring in a set of 5' high speakers that weight 140lbs each, but when a spectacular deal comes along, sometimes you have to jump on it and sort out the consequences later.
Eventually she got over the speakers. She was never really fond of them, but she didn't raise too much stink. After that, she never really complained about anything I did (I ended up selling them for double the price). Since then, I have been through about 6 other pairs of speakers, half a dozen source units, several receivers, separate amps, preamp, turntables, etc. Her only stipulation is that I self fund any upgrades, and for the most part, I have been able to do that through savvy/opportunistic buying/selling (sometimes fixing).
The pinnacle of her complacency came when I left her and the kids while on vacation in Michigan, drove to Buffalo (across Ontario) and came back with a minivan full of SS-M9 and Sony ES gear. The van was so full, we had to put all our luggage on the roof for the return trip . She couldn't possibly complain because I was able to sell most of the electronics and not only make back the purchase price, but profit by more than $1500, AND I still have the beautiful SS-M9, a nice steel rack, and an ES tuner. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
i'm careful about large deliveries...those go to the office...once the new item is safely in, it's easy to integrate into the system without notice...besides, the wifey buys boatloads of shoes;)

The best deal was when I got the "Easy as Pie speakers". She was out of town.
She came back, saw them, she HATED them. Her next words were "what will it take for you to stop
buying speakers?" The answer was" how about this set of Proacs".
They had just come in on trade at a local audio shop. I ended up with a nice upgrade.
A fellow polkie ended up with a very good deal on the elusive EAP speakers!"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

That brings back giant Maggie memories:
I drove through a terrible blizzard and back to buy an old set of 6' tall Maggie II's.
I was bringing the first one in from the garage and I got about the first 6" of the top corner into the house and my wife announce "those will never go in the upstairs" so I took them directly into the basement where they stayed. At least she was open-minded.

Remember Timmisan, logic and women do not mix, but for sake of happy life, make happy wife...
(In my very best Miagi impersonation.)
My wife's idea of logic is "look honey, I saved 50% off this $500 purse!"
My logic? "Honey, you could have saved 110% by NOT buying it to begin with" (the extra 10% is the cost of gas used to drive to the store in the first place.)The Gear... I think they are more logical that we think, but not straightforward so that we could actually comprehend it.
My 22 year old daughter is in Paris (the one in France) for a semester of study overseas (not sure how we can afford that but not a $100 used piece of stereo equipment). My wife asked her if she wanted a new laptop computer for Christmas since hers is getting old and starting to fail. My Daughter told us that she would rather have a !!!!$700 !!!!! (or so) purse. This morning it occurred to me that if she got the laptop she would still want the purse. But if she got the purse and her laptop died the next day we would have to buy her a laptop too.
What is a $700 purse? What purse could be worth $700? Why would a poor young student need a $700 purse? You can have everything I own in in my closet for $700.Norh ACA-2B tube pre, Sumo Andromeda SS amp. Hahaha great thread.
When I called my GF to ask if she wanted to go for a 3 hour road trip to buy a new set of speakers, she loved the idea. When we arrived and saw them, she was worried they wouldn't fit in her car. My A9's barely fit but they did with her seat moved up 2 notches (In a Hyundai Tiburon folks!) When we got them home and loaded into the living room. She posed next to one for a picture.
She loves the setup and the subs. I try to explain my purchases as best as I can and she understands why I do it because how evolved the sound becomes.
Yesterday I discussed the rule of "Synergy" and how speaker cables, IC's and so on with speakers and different amps can change that. She commented that "The Carver does make the speakers have that warm sound... I like it! Don't make it sound worse!"
I'm lucky. She even knows I plan on getting bigger subs eventually and other goodies... just I have to stop spending cash on toys until next year. -

Your girls don't like big speakers cause when they leave you and the judge awards the stereo to them, big speakers are harder to move. Get her a HTIB all for herself and shake her hand and say Merry Christmas honey!

Oh how naive we are!
She has her own speakers. KEF iQ9's. Powered by her own stereo integrated NAD C370 with a Denon DVD/SACD player as a source and a Onkyo tuner as the other source. Her Wii is run through the stereo as well. Also has her iPod dock but I don't consider iPods audio equipment. Also, a stereo mini plug to RCA cable for her laptop so she can watch streaming video with decent sound instead of laptop speakers. Has a small Belkin UPS for it all too.
I'm kinda jealous of her stereo. I couldn't match a set of speakers with an amp better if I tried.
Because she has her own stereo, she doesn't much care about the R15s rig, the SDA 2B rig or the Totem Rainmakers rig or the Amazings rig, likes KLH Model 20 rig in the exercise room and can't wait to see what the in-walls based home theater will sound like.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

It's not that we are not He-Man types, its just that if we get divorced they get 1/2 the money, 1/2 the house, 1/2 the stereo equipment, and all of the uhhh...ahem...P_ _sy.Norh ACA-2B tube pre, Sumo Andromeda SS amp. My compromise is that the wife does not enter the home office "much". But she still complains about the fact that I have an extra set of Vintage speakers in the TV HT room and the Basement HT. Why do you need "more" speakers? I'm sure you guys have heard this. I answer this question about once a week. I suspect by this summer the question will die down because we're talking about two sets of speakers I've had for over six months and that may have run me less than a 150 for both pairs!
I explain that though the HT speakers are fine for what they do. I have some vintage receivers that I like to run with "period" speakers for some old time listening. But it seems like I'm speaking Martian because I repeat myself every week!
I put a couple of nice bookshelves in her room and a receiver so she could have better sound from her laptop. She's used them once or twice?
(Off topic: I got to hear those KEFs Jstas is talking about, very nice!)
