Laser Disc

Hi All,
I missed the whole 'laser-disc' phase. Someone is selling a Pioneer Laserdisc system CLD-250 I believe, and his LD opera collection. Are laser-discs thought of highly, or did they go out of fashion for a reason? What would one expect to purchase used LD player and each LD?
Thanks,
James

I have owned and used Laserdiscs for the past 20 years. I currently own a Pioneer LD-S2, which is absolutely the best Laserdisc player you can get. If you are going to bother getting into LD's I recommend this player. However, I understand if there are titles you like included with the LD player for sale. the Pioneer CLD-S250 is a lower end LD player and I wouldn't pay more than $35.00 for the player (assuming it's in absolutely perfect condition). If it's much less than perfect, I would pay $15.00 at the most for the player. Each Laserdisc itself really depends on the titles you are talking about. Some are quite rare and worth more than the player is. If they are easily obtained LD's I would pay like $3.00 to $4.00 a piece (assuming they are in excellent shape).
As far as "going out of fashion", like records, people found smaller size more convenient (i.e. a 5" disc rather than a 12" one). With newer technology did come (a little) better resolution for the video on a DVD. However, if you do a search of the forum, many people (including myself) found that Laserdiscs absolutely blow away DVD's as far as sound quality goes. I would also say that being as LD's have been around since the late 70's and if an LD is in good condition it will still play. I will be suprised if DVD's last as long (with dual layer). Especially if you will be watching opera LD's (music LD's) I highly recommend an LD player. One other thing is that there is stuff out on LD's that is not (and may never be) available on DVD's and LD's. I hope this info helps you out.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....
