Solar switch for Xmas light?

I've got my Xmas lights up over a couple of different outlets for the outside.
But I have to unplug them either late at night before going to bed or leave them on all night til the next morning.
Instead of a timer, I was thinking some sort of plug in solar activated switch.
Anyone use these? Will they work for an outlet under a covered patio?

Wouldn't that turn them off as soon as it gets dark? I would think a timer would be better.Ludicrous gibs!

It would be the same sensor your car uses to turn on the headlights.
Never used one but interesting idea...Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!! -

No, they make special ones for Christmas Lights.
Erik, we used one for many years before it finally broke when it got snagged by the snow thrower in an early snow one year. My parents don't go as crazy as we used to so they just run an extension cord out from under the garage door now and keep it on an indoor timer.
But we had the sensor under some bushes. They went on a little early because it was shadowed more but it wasn't that big of a deal. If you want to, get one, test it out with like a lamp and see if it affects it. If it doesn't and it works ok, one of those sensors was one of the best $20 we spent on Christmas lights. Also, check for one that has a timer on it. Our did so we could set it to go on when it got dark and then shut off in like 5-6 hours so it wasn't on all night.
Totally worth it. Just gotta make sure that if it snows, you clear off the sensor or it won't work right.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

This seems like a good application for some of the X-10 units. They have timers, remote controls, even software for the computer.>

That's what ours looked like. Only it wasn't from that company. Ours was green too. I think my mom had gotten it at Kmart.Expert Moron Extraordinaire
