Hello. I have pair m70 front. Cs2 cente and a psw505 sub. Can the m60 work for rears since its in special at newegg. Or you recommend m40. I was also thinking another pair of m70 for rears. Any opinions or ideas will help. Thank you.

I have the same front stage as you. My 40's are surrounds and I have 30's as wides but soon to move to rears. The 40's work great as surrounds.

My next upgrade in the not so distant future is either the RTi A9's or the RTi12s. I'll upgrade my center as well, but the 70's will move to surround and the 40's will pull rear duty.

    Does that help at all?

What are you driving them with?

You will be fine with the rears as M70's. Not to be critical, but you have 3 threads open with the same exact question in each. You will get a lot better response by just posting once and letting everyone respond in regards with the information given.

I'd love to have some towers for rears, but the height isn't quite right for my needs. But if you can get by with it, by all means - go for it. Just keep in mind, unless you listen to music in a 5.1 stereo-type mode, the larger speakers will probably be overkill. Surrounds don't have the same demands as the front soundstage would. But as far as placement goes, I'd prefer towers over stands any day.

I wouldn't use towers for rear surrounds if your not running an extrnal amplifier. By running towers on the rear your just taking away from your front sound stage.

I second not using towers as rears. It is harder to place them correctly and your receiver is not very powerful, and will not do the best of a job driving 4 towers. Also, m60s would be a waste in that role, as you will never really hear that bottom driver. If you are dead set on towers for surrounds go with m50s, they are easier to drive.

Save a bunch of cash and go with Monitor 30's. They have keyhole mounts and are more than adequate for surrounds. I had Monitor 40's and they were kinda overkill for HT. I also used a set of R50 towers at one point and they didnt sound as good as the Monitor 40's for reasons of placement.

If I had it to do over I would have gotten Monitor 30's for surrounds (and 2 sets for 7.1) rather than the Monitor 40's.

I purchased a 7.1 set of Monitor speakers. 70s/CS2 up front with the 60s as side surround and the 40s as back surrounds. I tried it setup quite a few different ways and almost always decided I liked the 40s better as surrounds than the 60s. The 40s seem to go lower with less power even though they have fewer woofers. I believe the rear port has something to do with that. Additionally, the surround speakers always sounded better when positioned higher up than I would feel safe putting a pair of 60s. Both the 40s and 60s were a great match for the 70/CS2 front sound stage, and I could see both working out great depending on your room setup.

I have never experimented with di-pole speakers so I cannot compare them to the Monitor line

Onkyo TX-NR70x and up have pre outs. I am sure the pioneer guys will chime in as well. The Onkyo TX-NR709 can be bought for $499 from accessories4less.com . It is a refurb but you can purchase a 5 year warrenty for $50 bucks.

There's a lot of good advice here, and you'll be happier when you feed more power to the M70's. The difference will be noticeable. I was happy with a low-end receiver on M50's and M60's, but needed more when I jumped up to the M70's. For home theater, using those di-poles will be great. Music is intended for stereo sound, so your front R&L speakers are all you need to worry about for that.

I finally stopped changing and modifying my home theater recently, with four M70's for my front and rear surrounds. I know that some of you think tower speakers for the rear isn't necessary, and that is true in most cases, but most of my time is spent gaming. It's perfect for that, as I get an even, balanced tone coming from every speaker when combined with my XPA-5. Before I had all identical tower speakers, I could notice a difference in how games sounded depending on the direction. Running all of the same speaker, everything sounds fluid and seamless now.
