Thanks, just about at reader overload as they are all startng to meld together, got to fnd one of those comparison sheets. For sure though her hands wont stand up to the heavier models so thanks to all who pointed that out as it would of been a bad problem.

    Club Polk comes through again!!!

Cathy's statement about being locked into one ecosystem for books is not completely accurate. The iPad, for example, can actually display books from all 3 major online purchasing sources. In fact, if anything the iPad gives you MORE choice because it also has the apple bookstore in addition to amazon and Barnes.

My mom ordered the Lenovo and I'm headed out there now to set it up, she bough the a1. If you can wait until then, I'll post my impressions of that in the morning or later tonight.

If weight is an issue then I'd look at the iPad, the Samsung, maybe the new Asus Prime or one of the 7 inch models.

Ok, the short version is that the Lenovo is not a very good tablet. It's very glitchy and not smooth at all, and the screen isn't that great. It's lightweight and easy to hold, but beyond that I would not recommend it.

I had seen the larger k1 Lenovo in action and it ran well and do recommended the A1 to my mom and now regret doing so, they did not do a very good job with this tablet. It's not a knock on the brand either, as their larger tablet runs quite well, just too thick for my taste.

That Playbook is looking like a nice option, just don't know about it's real compatibility with android apps. I've heard it will run them, but can't imagine that's not going to come without its issues and limitations. I would check into that tablet and see if it'll run reader software from both amazon and Barnes and if so then it looks like it'll do the rest of the things on your list, is a small size and is fairly inexpensive.

You could look at one of the first gen model Samsung galaxy tablets which were 7, but I don't remember them being very well reviewed.

I'm starting to think the Playbook is looking more and more like the tablet for you. I do remember reading some not so flattering of that when it first launched, but I think theyve addressed most of those concerns, I would see if you can find some recent views. Sorry I can't help more there, I've never even picked one of those up.

My mom is returning the Lenovo on Monday and I'm giving her my ipad2 and upgrading to the 64gb model.

We looked at them all, and the best value is still a laptop for all our needs. That said, if you have to have one, the Kindle Fire is all that and a bag of chips right now, bang for the buck wise.

As nice as the iPad is, I'll be picking up a Playbook. I love everything it offers from a non-apple product.

Hope you figure out what you want!

I don't use one, but based on the feedback from my wife and daughter...that would be a very good choice.

I'd say you will be very happy with the ipad. It's a no-nonsense machine. Granted, lots of people bash apple for being so locked down (on the units and in the marketplace), but to me that offers reliability. They don't let crapware into the market by the thousands.

The other option would be to check ebay/craigslist for an HP touchpad. I can say that is another solid product (with questionable future support at this time). People are still selling them, they are just taking their $50-100 cut for being first line line. But you could still have a TP for $150-250 depending on the model.

Let us know! I'd love to get my hands on an ipad, but I can't justify paying $600 when I could get a laptop that will actually run full fledged programs, rather than apps (although not quite as conveniant or portable as a tablet)

iPad 2 gets my vote, I love it and as stated above its rock solid.. It took all of about 30 minutes to load my music off my PC, I also understand the laptop vs tablet but that's why I have both..

Looks like we're in the same boat Ted. I just bought an ipad2 for my wife last week (don't tell her). Waiting on delivery. Can't go wrong with one of these--tons of apps, portability and most people love theirs. I'll stick with my cheapo ACER netbook for trips for now, though!

I've been looking at tablets myself recently. Sounds like this is going to be a Christmas gift, so you probably don't have time as a luxury. The best I've come up with after lots of reading is I'm going to wait a little longer. The new Asus Prime is looking really good, but could turn out to be a dud once it is in enough peoples hands. This will be lighter and thinner than the iPad and Galaxy plus sporting the new quad core processor and soon to be released updated ICS os. Thus my hesitation to rush to order one until some others report on them. 5 bills for this in 32G config isn't too far out of line but more than the price point I was interested in when I started the search. In any case there should be a couple more new releases from other manufacturers as well, Lenovo for one, so the current offerings should dropping in price soon. I think if you want to go the 3G route the choices thin out some, as many are WiFi only. As others have said avoid the low end stuff they seem to do poorly in almost all they do. Samsung also offers a Galaxy 8.9" as well but is hard to find anywhere but BestBuy right now. As most agree on, decide on the form factor you feel is right for your wife then narrow it down from there.

If anyone cares, Dailysteals.com is selling the HTC EVO View 4G 32GB 7" tablet for $229 today and today only.

Uncharacteristic of Dailysteals, it's new with a 1-year warranty. Pretty good deal considering MSRP is $740. Dual cameras, GPS and WiFi of course.

I have an iPad2, 32gb. Absolutely love it. If you get one I highly recommend getting a smart cover for it as well. What a genius little peripheral.

My buddy got a Motorola Xoom a few weeks back. It is ok but I certainly would take the iPad over it anytime. The main, immediate issue I see with the Xoom is the weight. Compared to the iPad2, it feels like you are holding a couple of bricks, it is very heavy relatively speaking.

    Good luck.
