CD DAC question- Parasound

I have a Parasound cdp1000 and a Parasound DAC1000. I have them linked with RCA interconnect and was wondering what other options there are and also...what all the stuff on the DAC means. There are three lights on the left with different sampling frequencies, there is an Error Data light, and on the right there is a Polarity Invert button, a De-Emphasis light, and three buttons under Digital Input....2 opticals and one for coaxial. The way I'm hooked up it's always on coax of course, and it seems the sampling is automatic...but the other day I played a cd that just sounded terrible. It made me cringe...and I noticed the De-Emphasis LED was lit. I guess what I'm wondering is...what is the best way to hook this up (will I see rapid improvements with an optical connector?) and what do all the other lights/gadgets on this mean..specifically the de-emphasis?

Download the owners manual...seems to explain them fairly well.

There is no Toslink (optical) output on that CD player. The Digital Coax is the only digital output.

Even if it had one I doubt he'd see a difference to the upside. I've found digital coax to sound better on any gear I have had with both.
