This is my first home theater system I made it thru the auto cal except my sub won't turn on unless I'm watching a movie. I watch blue rays thru my ps3. If I plug in my iPod or watch a movie threw my DVr the sub stays off. I have tried switching threw every sound mode possible on my reciever.

Are your front speakers set to "large" in the receiver's options?

got to your setup, bypass the auto or manual mcacc and setup speakers and see if they are set to large or small. scroll down and see if your sub is listed, if so press the right button and select plus. if it isn't listed, then you should change the speaker size and scroll down again and select subwoofer from yes to plus. It's three options there, no, yes, and plus. It gives more bass for most listening. Otherwise it just provides the lfe signals for movies. After a while you will probably prefer that as I do, as that is a better sound. But initially with a sub it's easy to want more bass all the time.

I change mine depending on movie mood, or 4am drunken 2 channel music mood. Once you get the hang of it, do it often and you appreciate the difference.

I keep my speakers set to small.

and get an SPL meter from radio shack today. It's one of the cheapest upgrades with the greatest return.

I got it changed the setting to plus it works now. Should I changed all my speakers to small? I'm running to Polk rti8s 2 monitor70 series ll and a csi3. How do I get the most base out of all my speakers.

I would first calibrate your system w spl meter, then just experiment w the settings. If you have them small most bass will come from your sub and will give more power to your mains and surrounds. Start with all speakers small and go from there.
