I will have far less than 2k into these when they are done. I cannot think of better bang for the buck than that. I worked at Magnepan a summer or two before I joined the Marines, so I am more familiar with how these work than most. Having built them, including the process of laying the wires to the mylar film, made taking the risk a worthy effort.

That's interesting... Question... What type of glue do they recommend for attaching the aluminum wire to the mylar sheets? I have a pair of MG1.6QR that's about two years old... From what I understand, the Maggies delaminate sooner in humid areas, such as the southeast and Hawaii (where I live). So I expect my set to start to delaminate soon. My brother's SMGs delaminated after three years.

The factory reccommends using acetone to remove the adhesive from the damaged areas, the using a small amount of 3M stray adhesive to take the wire back down. I have found(as have others) that spray adehsive is ineffective at best, and interferes with the ability of the topcoat ahesive to secure the wire.

I have been using DAP contact cement in VERY small amounts to tack the wires back down. After tis is done, I will use 3M Fastbond NF30 for the permanent topcoat, which is used by the factory to seal teh wires to the mylar. Of course, we all knoe that with Magnepans, nothing is truly permanent.

Eh, if the price is right..... and it was......

Yeah, I understand ES and I've certainly bought gear sight unseen/unheard in the past. No need to get defensive for him, he's an adult. It's a risk and my comment is based on my Magnepan resources, history and fairly extensive ownership of the brand. I wouldn't have bought them, big deal. He'll recover the work and cost involved, plus it will be upgraded when he sells them down the road so it's a moot point in the end.

    They won't be for sale.:loneranger:

But yes Doro, I figure that if I waited to find a pair of these, I would have had to go 5k to get them, and even the newer 20.1's grab 7k plus. I knew I would be in good shape without too much risk. I am just glad I was right and have the needed skills to make them sing again. This job is really not that hard, but it is a major pain in the a$s.

You'll sell them eventually. I've read and heard that so many times from way more hardcore dudes than you John. It doesn't matter to me but don't kid yourself. I never say that phrase because it alludes to the fact that I've found the best one yet and the 20.1 isn't the top of the food chain for me personally.

Enjoy, have fun and experiment....that'll enhance the process.

these actually offer some good value for above average SQ, too bad they dont work, best of luck in getting them running as they are not cheap. I agree with Doro as I would not of laid the coin out, I once had a Club Polk member go listen to some speaks for me that were a thousand miles away from me, worked out well.

No luck involved, just skill and patience!

I get the idea that others would pass on them regardless of price, but for me it would be equivalent of passing up a 1965 Corvette Fuelie coupe for ten grand just because the car needed an engine rebuild, or passing on an otherwise mint set of 1.2TL., because the crossovers were fried. These Maggies are in mint condition otherwise, and I felt worth the effort. I could rebuild that 327 small-block blindfolded, and so it is with these.
