My wife is wanting a new laptop and I'd love for you guys who know about computers to post some good deals in the next couple of weeks. She'll need a fairly basic machine, but it needs to be fast online and with e-mail. No gaming, very little (if any) music or movie streaming.

Thanks!

Dell Inspiron 1707 from Staples i3 processor $529

I know dell gets a bad rap from some - but i like 'em.

Another vote for Dell, Asus or Leveno. You want links? Just some of the basics I would look for are i5, at least 500gb HDD, LED screen, 4gb ram. That should equal a nice laptop rig for the lady.

I guess it depends on the price. While I agree, some of these i5 machines are pretty nice - not everyone considers a $600 laptop for something just to surf the web and check a few e-mails. I know a couple of friends that have recently (last week) bought a Toshiba from BB for $269 if I remember?

While this is no powerhouse, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a single PC house - it definately has enough performance for someone that isn't going to be "running" programs on it. By that, I mean something that will actually be taxing the PC, not just opening e-mail or typing a word document.

I probably need to verify with her exactly how she plans to use it. While I have no problem spending $600 or more on a nice computer if she needs it, spending >$300 would be nice too.

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful.
