Dared SL2000 left channel is gone!!! SUCKS!!!

For some reason the left channel is gone!!!

Swapped cables, swapped tubes, swapped inputs and outputs!!! The other day I when I turned it on the left tube flared up then went to normal but no sound.. thats when I swapped tubes but still no sound out of the left channel..

what am I missing?? it sure sucks considering I have only played it a few times..

    Just a guess from previous experience, your tube might have blown a cathode resistor. Usually found soldered to the tube socket.

    So I emailed the guy I purchased this from on audiogon and it don't seem he wants to help me out. This was not a used unit it was brand new and all he sells is new Dared equipment he even has a link from the Polk forum for reviews of the SL2000, Looks like I will have to take it in to be looked at as I don't have the tools to trouble shoot it..

    Who did you buy it from? So he's not honoring the warranty? Is it in or out of warranty?

    Please answer my other questions. I have worked with Joe on another Dared piece which I didn't even buy from him. A local Polkie also worked with Joe on a Dared piece he bought used.

    Is it in warranty? I'm betting there is more to the story you're not revealing because if it's in warranty then he should honor it and so far you have given zero details.

    What more could there be to the story?? I have only had this unit for two months, the left channel bit the dust. The unit has been working just fine in my rig one day I turned it on to let everything warm up as I always do and the left tube flared up it seemed to go back to normal but there is no sound coming from the left channel as I stated above. Don't know what more info you need or what you think I'm holding back.

    I'm not sure what the warranty is on the unit as its not posted on his site nor is it posted in the manual. If I have to get it fixed my self fine but it is frustrating in the fact that it's only two months old, I'm sure you can understand that..

    I'm not posting to throw him under the bus I'm posting about my problem in hopes to get it fixed is all. He did send me a phone number of some guy to call and see about getting it fixed if that's all he is willing to do then I will call this guy and see what he can do but There is a shop in town I can take it to to be looked at and I won't have to ship it out.

    I think at the minimum it should have a 90 day warranty. I do know they don't do repairs on site and he recommends a guy in the same area to do the work. A local Polkie had to have his used Dared Sl2000A repaired for the same issue but the previous owner used the wrong rectifier which I believe caused the issue. That's why I wanted more info from you. So Joe basically said he's not paying for it? Did you ask him what the warranty is? I would not roll over that easy. I have worked with Joe before and so has the other Polkie and hes has been nothing but responsive and accommodating.

    Yes I mailed it out yesterday for warranty fix or exchange. Joe said he would take care of it!! I will update when I get it back.

    Larry, does this guy sell on ebay as "midwestsupport" out of Naperville, ILL? I know you bought on A-gon but thought he might sell elsewhere. I am looking at purchasing one of these and noticed he had a customer return for a failed SL2000 in September this year. Are these maybe hit and miss with quality?

    Yes,

    That's Joe Zhou who is an authorized Dared distributor and is in Naperville Illinois. Buy with confidence. It's hard to say why they failed. Our very own Daboyz had an input coupling cap blow, it was an Auricap which is a very high end cap. The problem was the previous owner ran the wrong rectifier, sold it with the wrong rectifier and when I saw it told Dave to switch it immediately, which he did, but a few months later one channel went out. His issue was solely from the prior owner using the wrong spec rectifier (5AR4) instead of the proper 5Z4. I am not saying all faliures are due to mis-use, but with tubes it certainly can be an issue, not to mention a bad tube can cause issues too.

    Just some food for thought.

    Stubby i got mine from Joe on Ebay.He had it listed at 469 obo.i offered 425 plus 25 shipping and got it.i may have been able to do better but i am tickled silly with my 450 purchase.i have 2 other pre's that are not as sweet sounding as this dared with stock tubes and i paid more for both of them.YMMV

    Thanks for the bodes of confidence in Dared products. It is on my list of pre's to consider. Also looking at VTL 2.5 and Marsh P2000, if I can find one used at a decent price. I know the Marsh isn't tube but many have praised it's warmer character. IE, it does not sound solid state.

    The VTL is a nice piece. I'd avoid the Marsh, I've read about too many problems with that particular pre.

    The Marsh is a hybrid pre-amp where the input section is tubes but the output is solid state so it's not as tubey sounding as a full tube pre. Also where the Dared really shines is that it uses tube rectification. That's part of what gives it such great tone.

    Just a couple I could google. I just remember reading some specific issues about the reliabilty and build of the P 2000T that sort of made me avoid it. I'm sure it wasn't all bad, but if IIRC small little build issues that at that price point shouldn't have happened. Not sure if there is support for the products today or not.

    I can only speak to what I know of the Dared, and that has been that's it's a solid performer, well built and sounds well outside it's price point if you put some good tubes in it.

    H9, sorry for not being more specific about which model I was speaking of! I was looking at the p2000b all solid state pre. I had noticed some complaints as you refered to with the hybrid. The solid state looks to be much better.
