Anyone else have IRA's or invested in precious metals? I recently converted 1/4 of my private 401K into Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium. I started buying precious metal coins and such from coin dealers years ago. You can buy in small amounts and up until recently, I had a crown Royal bag full of coins and it was just neat to have. I felt like I lived in the ages when this was actual currency.
Who else invests or collects coins? Any numismatics out there?

A friend of mine has done about the same a while back. I had a small inheritance from my European Ancestors that brought me some British Sovereigns from the Victorian period (nothing rare, they're quite common)--evidently, that's how people stored extra value or hedged it against the coin of their land--which, BTW, is once again in 'serious' question.
I also have some old, mostly silver Drachmas, again nothing formidable--a few pounds perhaps. Not currently on the market and don't plan to sell anything I have in the near future--just keep it around in case, well you know. In case paper money becomes what we light our fires with. lol
Some precious metals in ones portfolio these days, not a bad idea. Also some bonds...but those can fall too!

As part of my job I buy precious metals all day long. The selling slowed down a little when gold took a dump a short while ago but with the holidays here it has picked back up. I pay the most out of anyone in town so I am constantly buying. On average my typical payout is 20%-40% higher than my competition. I do have quite a bit personally but I also have my eye on a badass VPI TT right now so I may have to get rid of a few Krugerrands.Everything matters. That is all.
Money cannot buy happiness, but it sure can buy a bad **** boat to pull up along side it though. -

I sold my gold at $800 an oz. You can guess what i'm doin now. Had a nice collection of 1oz buffaloe dollars. All proof coins. Also had all the silver eagle's in proof. Kept me out of the poorhouse though. Best to buy from the U S Mint. Amazing how some coins would skyrocket 1 or 2 yrs later. Especialy limited sets.

Coin wise- probably an 1801 Large Cent, a penny that is the size of a half dollar. And a 1925 Stone Mountain Silver half dollar. Have found many silver dimes and quarters, wheat pennies, very few nickels for some reason.
Relic wise (Civil War)-CSA belt buckle, sold it a few years ago though. Several uniform jacket buttons, 1 gold plated. Dozens of mini balls and bullets etc. I have also found lantern turns, horse bridles and other oddball things.
Jewelry- 1/2 carat diamond solitare set in platinum. Various gold chains and rings.--Gary--

You do know that around where you live is where the Confederate gold disappeared (Chenault). Probably buried under the river now.
When I was a small lad, my father would give us a dollar a week in allowance. Silver dollars. Still have them.>

Ken, yes I know all about the Chenault gold legend. I actually live about 2 miles from the Chenault mansion that was built a year after the gold disappeared. His brother built another mansion about 500 yards from his. I know where the original Chenault homestead is as well. Even have permission from the land owner to metal detect there but have not gotten around to it yet.
I have been on the property where Heard's Fort is just over the Wilkes county line. Been all over the woods around Hester's Ferry which is just up the road from the Chenault houses. Just off Graball road. This road was named Graball (Grab All) years after the gold went missing supposedly. There has actually been some gold coins found in this area over the years.
You should come up one weekend. I can show you where the old town of Lisbon is. It was covered over when the lake was backed up. Right now with the water being so low you can see the tops of some buildings. AND see some of the walls from a Revolutionary War fort! This is kinda at the fork of where Broad River and Savannah River join. I can also show you an old mill on the Broad River that is pre Civil War.

Bumping this to the top instead of starting a new thread...
I recently spoke with the company I have my IRA's with. I was able to open a brokerage account which allows me to direct $$$ out of my typical Mutual Fund accounts and into physical precious metals. Since the brokerage account is still an IRA, I can't take possession of the physical metals. There's a buy/sell commission and a storage fee for them to store it in a vault.
Still, it's nice to now have the option to direct funds into this area. I'm also looking to make purchases outside of that so I can physically possess them.No excuses! -
I was speculating silver a while back right before the peak. I timed things pretty well. Bought between $16-28 per ounce. Sold just before it hit its high. Small time stuff, but it was fun.
Going forward I am going to devote a percentage of investment funds towards gold and silver. This time for the long haul. -
I like that idea of metal detection...sure beats my current plans of mastering alchemy.

It's weird that you can't actually hold this currency but I also wouldn't want that just sitting in my house, squirreled underneath some old **** and socks either....that would terrify me and I'm a serious gun owner. I'm sure my couple coins is not a big deal to the usual suspects in these dealings but I think it's a nice investment.
The vault is in Delaware and you can however, drop by if scheduled and see your account holdings. How neat is that? You sir are absolutely correct...FideliTrade in Wilimgton DE is the keeper of my holdings. I may give them a call to see if I can ride up there one day to at least see and touch what I purchased.No excuses!

Bought some more bullion today.
BofA Merrill Lynch have a target price of $2400 per oz of gold by then end of 2014. The announcement of QE3 had them revise their position on the target. -
