You can but your actually limiting the power out put of your AVR. The 4 ohm setting is there to limit power output so you dont burn up your avr running speakers that have a low impediance.
    AVR: Onkyo Tx-NR808
    Amplifier: Carver A-753x 250 watts x 3
Fronts: Polk RTI A7 (modded by Trey VR3)
Center: CSI A4 (modded by Trey VR3)
    Rear: FXI A4
    Sub: Polk DSW Pro 660wi
    TV: LG Infinia 50PX950 3D
    Speaker Cable: AudioQuest Type 8
    IC: AudioQuest Black Mamba II

Well since you got a TX-NR709 it has amplifier pre outs. I would suggest a good external amplifer. Since your running a 5.1 system you would need at least a 3 channel amp. That way the Left, Center, and Right speakers are all powered by the same source.

What amplifier greatly depends on your budget. I run a carver A-753x 250 watt x 3 in my system. I can push my RTI A'7's to referance level (82 on your onkyo) with no problems.
