New 660wi arrived today - question

So I got my 600wi today, and I already can tell this thing is quite the upgrade from my old Sony. I used the MCACC as a baseline for setup (I let it setup the delays and such, then I manually make changes)

The MCACC set my fronts and center to large, and turned my sub down -13 (this with the sub roughly halfway up). I changed the fronts/center to small, and moved the sub back up to 0 so I can adjust the volume on my own.

The issue that I'm having is that standard TV viewing isn't activating the auto on. The sub works when I turn it on (or when it's on before it goes to sleep). I've got the receiver set to auto-surround, and I've cranked it up to -10 and still no sub. I switch to the tuner, and the sub turns on within a couple of seconds and shakes my house.

Anyone else have this issue, or have any ideas what I can do? Should I change from Auto surround, to PLII or something? The volume and settings are more than enough for music (actually I want to turn the bass down), so I'm confused as to why it's not triggering during TV viewing?

SC-37 > LFE out > into Sub - Right channel (with LFE switch turned to ON). This sound about right?

Personally you should turn the sub to 1/4- 1/2 volume. Use the AVR to adjust LFE up or down depending on your needs. If you want the sub to fire up while watching TV then you should use a DSP setting in the receiver like PLII Movie/Game or something similar. The sub is simply doing it's job though, no LFE then it stays quiet. Check your crossover settings in MCACC also. If you have a SPL meter I would check the sub using the meter, run it a tad bit hot if you like .

I never use auto surround so I cant help, But try "Adv. Surround" option till you get TV Surround. Or try Standard to get PCM or different surround processes (THX, DTS, NEO, etc...). See if that rectifies the problem.

Yeah, it's set to 80 all around. I'll probably change the fronts to 60, but I'll putz around with that as I go. I'll definately try the PLII settings. I'm pretty sure that's what I had it at before. I think using MCACC changes too many settings and I may have missed something. Thanks for the ideas though - I'll post back once I find something

(BTW - makes sense, because Auto has me set to Stereo which wouldn't have any LFE channel)

What's anyone else have their sub up to? I think I've got the sub powering on by itself now. I've got the sub at 25 (think it goes to 40?) and I've set it at +10 in the setup.

Really wish I would have checked what it was before the sub change. I guess I'm a little surprised that the receiver wanted things set to -13, and I'm at +10. Is that normal? I know there is no magic number that anyone can tell me, but if I'm way off, I'd think I'd see it in a comparing a similar setup.

Maybe I really need to give it some time, and get some movies for testing rather than just watching TV.

My sub (550wi) is at +9 and I have the volume at 25 also. Works and sounds perfectly.

Yeah, after giving it a chance for a couple of hours - I think I'm at a happy place. I think I was unlucky enough to have a string of shows that had no surround or bass to them. Prime Suspect is on now, and I think I'm going to turn the sub down a notch or two. Commercials are starting to shake things. lol

Note to self.... Judge Judy and The Middle are not great media for setting up an audio calibration.

Thanks for the response though - I've never had anything above like +/- 3 before, so I wasn't sure if +10 was completely out of the ordinary. Sounds like its OK and not just me.

Try playing some music with a walking bass line. Then try the different phase settings. Your towers and sub could be canceling each other out. I have mine set to +1 in the avr and volume set around 18.

My Pro550WI needed to be turned up to 40 out of 40 in order to get even a faint output and the receiver at +10 to be slightly hot. At 0 on the receiver, the sub registered at 75db on the SPL meter compared to my mains which were at 82db! So even with the sub's level on 40 (yes, I counted four blinks) the sub would not blend with the mains and was too low.

I too am surprised that you need to turn the receiver's sub output so much in order to get the sub to match the mains on the SPL Meter.

Copied and pasted from another thread:

"By comparison, my 15" Dayton Titanic MKIII produced the same output at between 9 to 10 o'clock on the volume level knob.

I can barely get the DSWPro550WI to fill the room.

    Some possibilities here:
    1. My DSWPro550WI is defective.
    2. Your DSWPro660WI is defective.
    3. This is normal for these subs.
    4. No two rooms are the same and something is not set up properly."

I'll have to recheck my settings, but I've since either gotten things dialed in, or the sub is starting to break in. I know I'm down to like 25 on the sub, and I think I might be at +5-8 on the receiver. I've even thought about turning it down more, although I'm worried about how that will affect my auto on/off. I guess if I bumped up my receiver, and turned the sub down - it would get a stronger signal (thus turning on) but I could limit the sound?

I'll get back to you after the meat raffle and tell you what I ended up at. Just waiting for my neighbor to get home from work. His truck is already warm. lol

I did a little test by hooking up both the Polk DSWPro550WI and the Dayton Titanic, with the Polk's gain at 40 (full) and the Dayton at half, with both subs playing at the same time you couldn't even tell the Polk was on while the Dayton was booming away. At half gain the Dayton was significantly louder than the Polk at full gain!

I usually set my subs at the point where you can't "hear" the bass, which is a few dB lower than the mains (e.g. if your mains read 85dB, set the sub at 82-83dB), because the RS SPL meter is not 100% accurate at lower frequencies.

It seems like after the sub has gotten some run time, I've also found that +5-8 is enough to keep the SPL meter in the same range as the mains.
