Blu-Ray Audio Help Needed . . .

I have several Blu-ray discs with live concerts that I want to hear on my system. Is there a way to output the 24/96 audio to my Prism Orpheus? All the processing will have to be done by the Blu-ray player. My Orpheus is capable of digital and analog inputs, but will be more like a preamp in this situation.

Your DAC has analog inputs, I don't see why you couldn't output 24/96. Am I missing something? Your BDP has analog outs right?

I'm confused too Mike. Does your BDP have analog outs? If not, read this: http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/Pioneer-BDP-140-and-Atlona-DeEmbedder-ripping-SACDs-music-server

I guess I'm wholly confused myself. All this bitrate, LPCM, Master Audio nonsense has my head spinning. I have an Oppo BDP-93. If I output via analog, to Orpheus: A) does that mean I am outputting 24/96 and B) is there any better way?

Is there any way for me to use the DAC of the Orpheus?

    Not that I'm aware of.

No, but why not run it thru an analog input on the DAC (pass thru) and pass it on to the amps. I'm assuming your DAC also doubles as your preamp?

In the BDP menu toggle the digital output mode to LPCM and run a coax to the dig in on your DAC.

I considered doing that, but will the signal be downsampled or remain 24/96?

It you select "do not downsample" on your Bluray (or DVD player) digital output setup it will remain native 24/96. This is how I run my Bluray audio output thru my benchmark. It sounds awesome.

    Settings:

Digital: PCM (or LPCM) NOT bitstream
    Downsample: Disable/No

As long as your DAC supports 24/96 or 24/192, etc; set your DVD/BR to NOT downsample.

PCM is not restricted to 16 bits/44.1.

Note: Some DVD/BR players don't support full 192 support via Toslink, so go coaxial if you can.

Bluray players downsample into 2 ch via coax or optical so it is still high def but it wont be high def on multi channel using coax or optical

Correct. I'm a 2-channel HT'er dinosaur, so it works great for me.

Polkfarmboy and Steve, thanks for the help! That is exactly what I wanted to hear.

No problem. Many don't realize that these hi bit rates can be passed digitally from their DVD/BRP, provided the DAC supports that input.

Hook it up via coax into your DAC (don't forget to change the settings), and put on BR Rush Live in RIO, you'll crap your flat hat on the first song.

James Taylor Live at Beacon Theater (DVD) is 24 bit, give that a whirl if you're a fan. My Benchmark really struts it's stuff with 24bit material.

    HOLD UP;
It looks like it is a player dependent thing, from my research. Oppo can output 24/192 LPCM (settings in player) over coaxial. I'm sure others do too---this much I can say, if the coax dig output on Panasonic BR is being dropped to 16bit, the sound is definitely benefitting from being 24bit from the start (much like 24bit remastered CD's). I suspect my Panasonic does pass 24, otherwise it wouldn't offer settings to disable it. You might want to research your particular player to be sure.
