Refoamed the old Cerwin Vega D-3's this weekend

I decided it was time to refoam my old Cerwin Vega D-3's (bought in the late 80s) and put them into service in the garage (isn't that where all old speakers end up?). For 20 years I actually thought these things sounded pretty good, WOW how naive!
Before they were exiled to the garage I decided to see how they held up against my Tyler Acoustic Linbrook Sig Systems. The D-3's got slaughtered, even worse then I thought they would. First the D-3's are NOT transparent - it is very obvious sound is coming from 2 speakers, no sound stage what so ever and imaging is non existent. I used to think the D-3?s at least had good bass, isn?t that what Cerwin Vega?s were all about, now I know that is not the case, SLOW and BOOMY. The vocals is where the D-3?s really sucked, the midrange unit is the WORST.
At first I was reluctant to exile the D-3?s to a dirty garage, but after the above I realized that was the only place for them.

I had a set of those in my garage too. I made a new front baffle for them, dropped a 10" dayton sub in each cabinet. I am much with them now! lol--Gary--
Onkyo Integra M504, Bottlehead Foreplay III, Denon SACD, Thiel CS2.3, NHT VT-2, VT-3 and Evolution T6, Infinity RSIIIa, SDA1C and a few dozen other speakers around the house I change in and out. -
Garage speakers should be those that don't sound so good when you're actually in the garage. I think you may have a pair of winners there in that respect.
