Hi, kind of new here and have a question. I have a chance to pick-up a pair of monitor 7s in very good condition for $50.00.He has the stands but says they will be extra. Is this a good deal? Also, how do you think they would sound being driven by a Marantz 2330b?

    Welcome to the forum

The Monitor 7s are sweet speakers. The stands, if they are the originals, are pretty rare and nicely tilt the speakers slightly back to theoretically align the drivers in a vertical plane. There are different series of the 7s. (A,B,C) the difference that most people discuss is the tweeter that was used in the series. I have a pair of the 7Bs that I bought new in 79 and last month at Polkfest we hooked them up after being in storage for a while and I was again amazed with how good they sound. They are easy to drive as I originally used them with a 20 watt per channel NAD 3020 integrated amp, though they will sound better with better electronics. There are two areas of updating that can be done on them if you would want to after using them for a period of time. The crossover capacitors can be improved since electrolytics do age some over time and the resistors can be improved. A fun and simple project if you have even basic soldering skills. Some people decide that the latter tweeters are a little bright and squire the RDO tweeters as replacements. The early 7s had tweeters from the Peerless company that are the most sought after. The large cone on the bottom is a passive radiator. It is coupled to the driver by the sealed cabinet. Make sure when you look at them to gently push in the passive radiator and see that the driver moves in the opposite direction. Sometimes the driver can have a magnet shift and make it not function. This is an age issue and is not normally a problem. It becomes a large problem when these speakers are handled rough - as in being shipped and tossed around by the commercial shipping companies. If the drivers all move free and they are in presentable shape should be a good deal. Are you able to hear them play when you go to get them?

    Hope this helps

That's a steal price! They are very nice sounding speakers. The advice to push the large passive in and make sure the small speaker moves is good. I drove mine for a while with a 30 watt tube amp. They also sound fine driven with a 250 watt amp.
