Forum Friends

So, I went to the 'Notifications' part of the forum tonight to reply to a message, and I noticed there were some requests to be 'Friends' sitting there in the in-box, or whatever it is called. Anyway, not to sound more stupid than usual, but what does the 'Friend' feature do? Do you get an email every time a 'Friend' makes a post? Or what?
