Read about the creation of Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres-Quevedo in this article at Wired.com (ironic, isn't it?)

If you have the opinion that remote control has made people lazy, he's the guy to blame :D

    heh, I remember (well) the Zenith "Space Command" (and RCA's remotes of the same era) that used mechanical high-frequency (ultrasonic) audio to activate the "channel clunker". One could change the TV channels by jingling a ring of keys in front of the TV's remote receiver.
