Proper old tv disposal

I finally replaced my last tv with a LCD. I check to see the rules of disposal.
The rules are just short of moon rocks and reactor cores. You either have to drive 30 miles to a center,
or order a special recycling box for $80 and call for pickup.
I took the lowlife way out. I put the set out on bulk pick up day, and one of the wandering
scavengers driving around in an old pick up truck grabbed it. Every bulk week, they circle around
the neighborhood picking through anything of interest. SCORE!
Is it just me, or are we all just short of becoming a third world country?

That's the same way I got rid of my washer and dryer, except, I didn't even have time to put a sign on them. I had dragged them onto the front porch and was hooking up the new ones when I heard a knock on the door. Strange guy standing there with an old pickup truck behind him. "Are these trash?" "Sure, I'll help you load them up". And they were gone... inside of 10 minutes. Wasn't even trash day.
    Ludicrous gibs!

I've had a lot of stuff barely make it to the curb.
I see about 5 or 6 trucks circling on bulk week.

I have had things taken from the side of the road I thought would sit for weeks...

Someone took the top half of a barstool (just the top) and it was severely broken and a couch that had sat outside for approx 3 weeks and had been rained on. Both of those items lasted all of thirty minutes, if that...

Threw mine in the dumpster at work. It goes to an industrial landfill, all kinds of sruff in there, TV would be the least of their worries.

I'm all for doing the right thing with hazardous waste. But they sure made it hard to do.
There seems to be a real underground thing going on in Dallas.
You should see garage sales around here. They look like circus events.
A neighborhood garage sale backs up traffic like a Cowboys game.
Dumpster diving and trash picking are very common.

This is so true. We have an old window A/C unit sitting in the garage that may or may not still work (honestly not sure). To dispose of it, we basically have to take it somewhere and pay to have the freon "properly" disposed of. Only then are we allowed to take it to one of the disposal centers, which aren't exactly close and convenient. I'm all for helping out, but when I have to jump through a series of hoops and take a day off from work due to their limited schedule, it doesn't exactly inspire me to care. I think I will go with the ol' curb method myself.

Curb method always works. I made pickers day a few weeks ago. Needed to get rid of washer & dryer out of basement. Seen them at neighbors house. Told them it was there's if they hauled it out. Best thing to happen to them all week. There words, not mine.

my apartment managers just replaced some very very bad carpet from the place beside me. They had a cat and it was apparent that it liked to pee anywhere it could. Some guy came and grab the carpet out of the dumpster.

I also threw out a old futon matress that I had sitting in my garage, that took about 5 minutes and someone grabbed it. Was full of beer as it was next to a case that exploded in the winter one year and also paint, wood chips, and other random things.

And I know not anyone wants to go there but best buy will take TV's normally under 32". They will have you give them 10 bucks and then they give you a 10 dollar gift card. At least thats what they used to do. Last time I took in a TV that my gf had sitting around that wasn't working so that was about 5 months ago.

I suppose that's an acceptable solution. I took a couple of my old sets down to the local BB. They have a program that, supposedly, recycles these items and gives you a small credit? I still have a couple in service though--basement and exercise room!

I have one of those 36" flat screen CRT's. It's a nice unit but weighs 250 lbs. The bigger need is to replace the cabinet in since it is all banged up. However, I don't think they make cabinets to hold such heavy TV's any longer.

I have tried to give it away (complete with cabinet) to acquaintances but no one wants it. When I tell them how heavy it is they decline. Thing is, for SD television it has a better picture than most LCD's out there.

I wouldn't mind getting rid of it so I am thinking of putting it on Craigslist with a $0 pricetag on it. I'm sure it will disappear quickly. Moving it to the curbside is not an option since 1) it's heavy and I can't do it alone, and 2) not much traffic on my street.

Max, It never fails to amaze me how quickly stuff moves when you put them on craigslist for free. Put that TV up and you will have 20 responses within 2 hours. I bet you'd get rid of it even if it were non working!

Things I've had taken for free:

A flatbed trailer with seized bearings, flat tires and rotten wood bed (left by previous house owner, sat in the woods for years), gone in less than 4 hours.
An old natural gas grill that was rusted out on the bottom completely, gone in less than 4 hours.
A set of awful country albums (I picked out the good stuff and gave away the trash), gone in less than 6 hours.
A kids toy workbench, covered in mold, mildew, etc., had been sitting outside for years, gone in less than 2 hours.
A kids SUV (Hummer) that had been sitting outside for years. Not sure if it worked or not, gone in less than 3 hours.
A pair of bicycles that were left in my yard (two separate occasions). Both were trashed. Gone in less than a day.

There were probably a few others, but you get the drift.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

yep agree with the CL idea. There are always people willing to pick stuff up for free and haul it away. let them deal with it. I know a couple older guys that do this around my area so they can pull whatever metal they can and then try and sell it for profit. There's not a ton but when you do it so many times it can add up.

However on items that really have no value I don't fully understand. Like cat pee carpet. It even smelled terrible as when I threw away my trash it just stunk and you could see all the stains on it. Not sure how you can even save that.

Putting it out on the curb is a good way to get rid of old girl friends too.
They get picked up in no time.

I gave my old 32" Toshiba to the guy begging for money on the corner everyday. The look on his face was like WTF am I going to do with this. He took it anyway, lol. A backpack,a money can, and a tv. Now that's livin'!!
    Everything matters. That is all.
Money cannot buy happiness, but it sure can buy a bad **** boat to pull up along side it though.

My introduction to the world of scavengers was when my wife and I moved into our first house 20+yrs ago. My father helped me pull the nasty-**** carpet out of the living areas and move it to the street. It was nicely rolled and the exposed carpet really didn't look too bad. Afterward, my Dad was seen going to the curb with a sign on a stick. "For Sale- Carpet $300 dollars, enquire within". Gone by morning! Variations of same have saved me many trips to the dump!
