Hey guys
I need help in choosing to upgrade my weakest link. My PSW 505. It is a great sub for the coin I paid however I need something that drops low and clean. looking to spend below $600 Im 80/20 HT. Would really like to hear stories of those who owned the 505 then moved up.

Well, my story doesn't exactly qualify, but...started with a PSW303, then went the upgrade route to an Epik Valor sealed sub and I'm 80-music/20-HT....still have the Valor (about $600 but no longer available).

I went from a 505, to dual 505's to an SVS 16-46 to an SVS pb12 and am really happy with were i'm at. The 505's just can't come close to the SVS's, it's a night and day difference. I bought mine used less than 6months old for $475, so shop around and you'll be able to get a hell of a sub for $600. Check out SVS, Epik, HSU and ED. Good luck!

I have never owned a psw505, but I did own a cadence x-sub12, which is very similar (it hit 104 db at 25hz in my room which is about what the psw505 can do according to ed mullen of svs's review). I now have an HSU vtf-3r which is basically an older version of the vtf-2 mk3, and it is night and day. Deeper, tighter, cleaner, the frequency response is very flat, and very authoritative. I will say that in my dual rig, the main objective is always music, and from what I have read the SVS's will get you a little more output at a little lower hz, but at the expense of musicality (however, I have never actually heard one). So there is my 2 cents for what its worth...

I wouldn't call it light years ahead. For the budget he's got, he could easily get a vtf-3 instead of a vtf-2, which is a HUGE difference. The vtf-3 is light years ahead. The new vtf-3 mk4 is 699 new from HSU. He should be able to find the vtf-3 mk3 used for 400-500.

No comparison from what I have heard. Ed A5-300 trounces it

The more and more I read I think the HSU vtf-2 mk4 is what I will get to replace my psw505, Unless anyone has a really good reason why i should get something diffrent. My room size is under 2200ft3

PS any issues with a down firing sub? Currently mine is in a corner behind one of our couches so i get alot of boomy reflections.

Mine vtf-3r is setup as an end table next to the couch and is down-firing onto faux hardwood floors. It sounds great even being about 12 feet from my monitors. Flat response, not boomy at all. YMMV.

Well I really doubt that anyone has actually heard both (especially since the former is new), and one is Dr. HSU's own company and the another was designed with his help, so I doubt there is much difference other than aesthetic. I personally think the standard finish on the outlaw looks a little nicer than the standard finish on the HSU, but that's just me. I personally would go with the HSU because it has a sealed option which might be ideal for music, but if music is not that important to you then its pretty much a toss up. Sorry for the lack of help...

the ed would definitely dig deeper and hit harder, but it wouldn't be as obvious an upgrade as the HSU. I owned the ed A3-300 and while it was great for HT, and a big improvement in terms of deep bass extension over what I had at the time, it was a little slow on music. the kick drum lingered for a little too long, which really bothers me. I don't notice that with the HSU, and it hits as hard and digs as deep, and the new one has a sealed option which should be incredible for music.

Outlaw and I had some issues with shipping so my order was canceled and I pulled the trigger on HSU's newly improved VTF-2 MK4.
After it comes in I'll post a review comparing the two just in case others had similar upgrade questions on the PSW505.

ps anyone own this sub already?
