That amp is Common Ground and would work with SDA's.
Some people prefer the Carver amp sound with there SDA's.
I am not sure how much you want to spend but if the bidding stays where it is that would be a real good deal for that Carver. -
Mr Joe08867, thanks for the information. how much maximum bid would i go for this kind of amp? i usually just go for my maximum bid on ebay within 30 seconds of time left. thanks a lot for the help.
i'm so tired of searching for a compatible amp that would drive these speakers and enjoy the SDA effect. if i cant, then it'll just be better of to get rid of these SDAs and buy me a pair of RTi12s at ebay for 800 bucks and not worry about those ohms thing.
its like having a mustang '65. its beautiful but the upkeeps gonna cost you. i'll just rather buy a brand new mustang. -
Consider that the amp is 20 years old and will need a recap, so add $300.00 to the final price.Political Correctness'.........defined

I understand how you feel but there's nothing like the smell, feel and sound of an old Mustang. The same can pretty much be said about those SDA's.
As far as price I don't know. I haven't bought a new amp in years so I just don't know how much they are worth anymore. If I had to guess 3-350 would be my ballpark max for that but I could be way off. Wait for others to chime in. -

OMG! ill just go for the emotiva XPA series then.
a '65 mustang is really a sight to behold!!! -

Why don't you peruse Audiogon for a better amp in your price range instead.Political Correctness'.........defined

Emotiva is an excellent choice. I've owned both the XPA-2 and the UPA-2 and they're both excellent amps. I mean, I haven't done any side by side comparisons but I feel like they are just as good as any of my previous amps like the Rotel RB-1080, Nad C272, Carver TFM-45, and Onix SP3 mkii to name a few. I'm running a UPA-2 with my SDA-2B's now and absolutely love the resolution and clarity. I didn't enjoy the first few days with my UPA-2, but either my ears or the amp opened up because now I love the thing.
Their is a small group of regulars that dislike Emotiva here (some with a weird amp superiority complex), but their are several of us who have Emo amps in our systems and absolutely love them. With all the amps I've tried in my own system, and all of the songs I've recorded and produced professionally, my ears aren't hearing anything "entry level" and I really think Emotiva is a phenomenal bargain. -
^^^There are also far more than a few that have owned them, used them and had them in their rigs and have gotten rid of them, saying the exact opposite things that you do. The best advice I can give is from experience. Experience says to trust your own ears and your wallet, and everyone says that if you decide to go pre-owned on teh amp, you can do better than Emo for your dollar. The Gear... You might hear that here, but it's the exact opposite literally everywhere else. But don't take my word for it, google that ****.
OP, he's right about trusting your ears and wallet. I would say, trust your ears on this one and your wallet will thank you -

With certitude like this, you must be the seller...
jayjax,
Consider the source.
As an owner of several, all-original Carvers (all working just fine, thank you), if the ebay seller is reputable, odds are the 1.0 you are eyeballing is just fine.More later,

Wow Bruce, your panties must really be jammed up your crack. It's common knowledge that after 20 years those electrolytic caps have seen the best of their life span and should be changed. If for no other reason than it will prevent a more expensive repair when one or more caps leak on the board. An even more important matter considering that those cheap a$$ caps Carver used are particularly nasty and have been known to completely ruin a board. It would serve you well to change yours now before the inevitable.

hey hey hey!!! cool it guys! chill!!
the truth is, it all depends upon the wallet and your priorities in life. and my first priority right now, isn't for my old vintage SDA2a speakers. its the fuji SST 3.0 all carbon bike! oh yeah!
anyway, i just read my yamaha RX-A1000 AVR manual last night and i discovered that i can actually change the settings to 4 ohms with 210 watts per channel. so, i did it right away and have enjoyed loud music ever since without worrying about the risk of burning my AVR.
maybe i'll just settle for an emotiva amp. the emotiva XPA-3 looks promising too. sorry to disappoint others here who dont like emotiva but thats all my wallet can afford. i work for myself and i dont have rich-a$$ parents who's always there financially. -

What a pant load. Small group? Anyone who has been in this hobby awhile will agree that Emotiva is good entry level gear. Nothing more nothing less. It doesn't even begin to scratch the surface compared to more musical amps, which guess what, usually cost a bit more and are better designs. You are absolutely entitled to hear what you hear, but your comparison of Emotiva to the other amps is the rare exception, not the norm. The Carver, Rotel and NAD are easily more musical to most people. If Emo gear is your heaven then have at it, who am I to say you don't enjoy it. But again, your opinion is not the norm or you need to get your ears on some better gear for comparison. And no you don't need to spend thousands to get a better amp or cdp or dac or pre-amp.
I'm tired of Emo owners referring to other people who own different amps as having a superiority complex. Most amps that many of us own who have been around this stuff for a long time are superior.

Better to buy (and renovate, if needed) a decent used unit than to send your money to the Emo Communists.
You'll wind up with a better unit, and you won't be strengthening the Chinese economy while weakening the North American economy. -
I ran a M1.0t for 3 years (bought it new with the 1.2's and still have it) before I bought the TFM-35 and it was a most capable and musical amp. It has loads of reserve and even though I could hit the clipping indicators, it never sounded clipped.'65 427 Shelby Cobra

**** my friend. Your argument has never been to put Emotiva in the "entry level" category. I don't think anyone would have a problem with you saying that. You take it a step further quite often by insulting their products every time the name comes up around here. It's fine that you don't like them, I don't like a lot of things. But there are people here who have the exact opposite opinion that you have, who own the gear, so have some respect for cryin' out loud. Audio snobbery is what I have a problem with and it's disgusting how prevalent it is around here. -

Nonsense! The efforts of some who help inform those who don't yet know the benefits of high quality gear is not snobbery. Rather, it is the duty of those in the know to help elevate the standards here.Political Correctness'.........defined

That's laughable, really, and kind of creepy too.
I should clarify, the effort to help people is not laughable (or creepy), it's great and appreciated by many including myself. But a house with no rules is a house of chaos. The standard to push should be civility and respect for the love of the hobby. Not brand bashing in the name of raising the bar. -

As an engineer who has to deal daily with outsourced jobs to China and India, which forces me to compete worldwide for my job, I sort of agree wth you. Are you saying that Polk has outsourced all their product to the Communists? I was afraid of that. Looked at the Polk subwoofers while killing time at the local Best Buy; saw the Made in China tag on the box, and dropped it like a broken rubber. I was hoping that only the bottom-of-the-line was Chinese (I should know better.)
That's why I only bought two RD0-198s instead of four for my 1Bs. I may be forced to buy Chinese now and then; but I'll buy the minimum I can get by with. -

I wonder if they would take an even trade of a Shunyata Python CX power cable, or give me a few dollars back?
On a side note, the November 2011 issue of stereophile has a review of the Emotiva XPA-5 by Kalman Rubinson, and it is an overall positive review. Granted, it was not referred to as a 'giant killer', or a 'bargain in high-end audio', but it wasn't negative. If I were just getting going with a HT, or stereo, their gear is probably a great starting point. Personally, I would rather have something new versus 20 year old stuff, no matter how good the old stuff was in its time.
One quote from the review is
"I was quite taken with what I heard from my system with the XPA-5. Compared to the Bryston 9B, the Emotiva seemed to lack treble, yet that did not obtrude into my normal enjoyment of the music: all the treble was presented in proper balance. With the Paradigm Studio/60s, this may even have been a salubrious effect. At the bottom end, the XPA-5 seemed more full but less precise than the Bryston, but again, that distinction was largely erased bu using good subwoofers and bass management.....If I could level one criticism at the Emotiva it would be that, in comparison to the Bryston, the XPA-5's upper midrange and lower treble were a bit less transparent and resolving. Still for $899...heck forget that conditional: I am greatly impressed with the Emotiva XPA-5"Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Emo is fine but there are many others that are far superior. B&K, Rotel, Adcom, NAD, Parasound the list goes on and on.
When Emo makes something as musical as a B&K I will buy one. Until then they are not on my recommendation list.
Audio, take a chill pill. You are in over your head. You need to sit back and listen a bit more before you expound on the virtues of an Amp. You just aren't that knowledgeable yet. Sorry but it is inherently true.
