How many spaces after the period? One or two?

Anybody remember the poster who put a space at the end of the sentence, before the period, or other punctuation ? And then started the next sentence like this . I guess you could say he/she/it used two periods .Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes
Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables
Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
Three 20 amp circuits. -
... I turned in my final thesis - 128 pages, and my advisor gave it back and said that there had to be one space after each period. I went back and took about 3 hours redoing every sentence for 128 pages so it only had one space. Now, I only use one space to keep myself from further trouble. ...
Doesn't your word processor have a search and replace? My guess is that edit should have taken about 12 seconds + print time...
In my humble opinion, two spaces are proper in business and one space is cutting corners. If someone is cutting corners in their correspondence with me, I consider that when evaluating their input.
A more important question is whether or not someone puts a comma prior to the last item in a list. Having graduated from HS prior to 1985, I always place a comma where those post 1985 grads consider it redundant. I guess that is much like always placing parenthesis around equations and such in source code when it is inherently interpreted by the compiler that way. -

I graduated HS in '02, and I learned that you can do it either way. I tend to opt for the last comma; it just feels right. See that semicolon there? I enjoy a correctly-wielded semicolon; it can be an effective tool.:biggrin:2-Channel: PC > Schiit Eitr > Audio Research DAC-8 > Audio Research LS-26 > Pass Labs X-250.5 > Magnepan 3.7's

My law school required two spaces after every period for any paper to be handed in for grading.

I prefer 42 spaces after the period. Also, semicolons are awesome when used properly. I also think that the word "cattywampus" is underused.

It didn't pertain to our discussion but since you asked for it...Documentation I: Notes and Bibliography
Multivolume Works
14.121 Volume numbers and page numbers.
In documentation, volume numbers are always given in arabic numerals, even if in the original work they appear in roman numberals or are spelled out. If the volume number is immediately followed by a page number, the abbreviation vol. is omitted and a colon separates the volume number from the page number with no intervening spaces. See the examples throughout this section. -

IMO, it is quite possible that the use of a single space was a well researched and educated decision an you would be penalizing it, when other person might just use 2 spaces without even understanding why.
