PSW 505 -- That is one BIG box!

I recently bought a Pioneer vsx-1121-k AV receiver. I intend to use it in a new home I am building using Polk Audio in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. Until that's ready, I bought the least expensive 5.0 speaker set I coud find (I will not be using those in the new house because my wife must be allergic to exposed wires). I also bought a PSW 505 which I will use now and in my new home.

I have never owned a subwoofer before now. That is one large box. My wife was appalled when she saw it sitting next to our AV cabinet. I need lots of bass power because it will be in an open great room. What can I do to minimize the SW's visual impact without jeopardizing its audio output?
Are you pondering what I'm pondering?

I have tried several things over the years. At one point my sub was sitting under a window and therefore could be hidden by the loose drapes. In another situation a front-firing sealed sub (or one with a front-firing port) could be placed in my cabinet. My current solution is to use my HSU sub (almost twice the size of yours) as an end table with the amp in my cabinet and the speaker wire running hidden under the baseboard (I think that this is the best approach if you can swing it).

If none of these is an option, my next best suggestion is to buy a nice vase full of roses and plop that sucker right down on top of the sub. She won't even notice that big black box anymore ;-)

You could cut a hole in the floor and paint the grill cover to match the carpet

Experiment with other placements of the sub and see if they 'work'. A less obtrusive location, for example, would be behind the sofa--be warned that that might not be the 'optimal' location. You should listen and decide.

    rooftop59,

This is the best suggestion of all. Roses work wonders.

Actually, when I brought her in to listen to the sound now that I have the Pioneer AV receiver hooked up to the speakers, PSW 505 subwoofer, DVR/Cable box, Blue-ray player, and TV, she isn't complaining nearly as loudly. The subwoofer makes all the difference with how good everything sounds. It doesn't even need to be set to a loud, room-shaking volume to make the low end of FM stereo, TV shows, Internet radio, and CDs really come alive.

Thanks for the other ideas (except for the blinding thing -- that's a bit over the top)

Blinding is a bit extreme, I would have told her to mind her own business and go do laundry:biggrin:, or show her the dimensions of a lot of the other Subwoofers on the market. (Hell just show her the prices, that would be enough in itself)

Just gotta show her that folded horn sub in the FS section. She will be glad with a blaze orange bass tube sitting on the couch after that. lol
