New Mattress Lately?

My wife and I were loosely in the market for a new mattress set and after she slept on a Simmons, at a AVIA hotel in Savannah, GA....she came back home on a mission. I was constantly waking up in pain above and beyond my usual discomfort as I swear my hips were actually laying on the coils of the mattress. This was so bad that I would shift every 45 minutes or so as it started to make my hips ache and when I was asleep....am sure that I was probably doing the same dance.

Now, keep in mind that we only had a 10yr old mattress from Sealy, which was not cheap when we bought it back then. To think that this simple item was the cause of both of our issues seemed a little beyond belief but I figured we'd shop around and see what was out there.

Long story short, we shopped around the bigger name places, Mattress Warehouse, 1800 Mattress, etc etc and decided on a mutual choice.

The mattress she slept on at the AVIA was a Simmons Westbury, which is a commercial offering. We shopped for the same, and the one above and below. You could buy the one from the hotel, thru a private offering thru Simmons but I wanted to feel the mattress and not just go on my wife's recommendation. This is something we'll be sleeping on for years and while I love her, this isn't something that's easy to decide based on the internet.

We ended up choosing the model above the Westbury and a retail store model called the Beautyrest Black Mia Plush(Desiree). I cannot expound enough about how this mattress changed my sleeping habits and overall comfort. It's just amazing. It's also a 20yr, No Flip design which as heavy as this thing is, thank goodness.

If you haven't thought about your sleep lately, or lack thereof, double check yourself and make sure you aren't due for a change.

I haven't slept this good in over a year and I don't even sleep that much due to being an hardcore insomniac. My hip pain is gone and I'm just overall happier.

We looked at the Tempurpedic, Sleep Number(?) and the Simmons NXG which is the Simmons version of Tempurpedic. We just could not get into the 100% foam idea and it was just weird for lack of a better way to explain it. The settling of your body into the bed felt odd and the reflex action when you moved to change position was too slow and left small, albeit temporary divots where you previously were located. The Sleep Number thing also didn't work because of the divide in the middle of the bed and we like to be close to one another at times, not getting raphic, but you know what I mean and at that point the divide was easily apparent to us in the demo model. It just seemed like to much work to just sleep to boot.

I guess we're just traditional but the construction of the Simmons Black series has a memory foam surround but a coil core which really suited us the best. It comines the strengths of the memory foam with the support of an individually wrapped coil. The coils are also multiple wires, twisted into a single coil which you don't have to be an engineer to know that it should in theory, have more spring or support by design. They are alternated with traditional coils to make it softer. There was an even plusher version but it was simply too expensive and more than we were willing to spend. It also wasn't OBVIOUSLY softer when testing it so we didn't go there. In the end, we bought the middle model, of the TOTL series.

http://www.beautyrestblack.com/collection.html

Sleep is something that is important to our lives and you can't skimp on what you will be sleeping on for years. Years guys, not just months. If you're having issues, really check into what your sleeping on and how long it's been since the last purchase as this new mattress seriously made my life better. No kidding guys and for the record, I work in telecommunications, not retail mattress sales so I have no vested interest in it all.

Has anyone else recently invested or purchased a bedset recently?

I like the rhapsody ergonomic. Did you try the ergonomic beds? It's a 7k bed but feels great with being able to adjust the entire bed up and down.

It wasn't in the stores that we shopped in but would certainly have tried it out TOE. Do you have a link, just for curiosities sake? There's no way I would have paid that much anyways but it sounds neat.

Yeah, I believe so. We sold our old King set for $150 to a horse farm. Personally, I'd never buy a used mattress but I guess there are other uses for them. I posted it on Craigslist on a lark and got about 20 hits in 24 hours....who'd a thought I guess and I'm $150 richer for something that I normally would have let go to the delivery guys.

I just had a wonderful, long overdue night out with my favorite gal on that egg.

3 years ago when I bought my house, I was dead set on a new bedroom set, including new mattress and box springs. I had a queen sized Beauty Rest from around 1993 that was going bye bye. Awesome bed! I went king size and spent darn near $2k on my new mattress, box springs and mattress cover.

I'll never buy anything but a Simmons Beauty Rest! This bed flat out rocks and I sleep great!
    No excuses!

This is a link for the ergonomic bed itself. We got the rhapsody topper with it. You can choose all kinds of tops but the lesser tops didn't do it for me and the better ones go up considerably in price and well this one ain't cheap lol.

I gotta get a new mattress set. Waiting for another big sale to hit. It's gonna suck on the bank account but the mattress I have is 3 years old and already it's getting a little long in the tooth. It was just a "tied me over" set when I was moving in to the house and needed something to sleep on. The old mattress set was beat and had a huge divot from the ex so I got rid of it. I didn't even buy it, it was a gift and it never really suited me. But I went with a friend and his wife because he wanted the use of my truck to get his mattress set and I was sitting on mattresses myself anyway despite the salesmen not wanting me to mess up displays. I liked that black series too. The Stearns and Foster ones were high on my list as well but they were a couple grand at least.

Hopefully by Christmas I can get myself a new mattress set.

And yeah, those Sleep Number beds, the air mattress part lasts a long time but the padding over that divider wears out. A friend had one, insisted I try it and see how it worked. I went to adjust position and whacked my elbow on it. I was surprised at how hard it was and it was a show stopper for me. I don't want to rollover on something like that in the middle of the night. His Sleep Number bed was only about 6 years old too and they have like a 10 year warranty on it or something.

First of all, I find it hard to believe you'll get 20 yrs and no flip. It would be fantastic, but like 20 yr paint or shingles, I suspect a shorter actual service length. Even the better mattresses require reversing, so I think if they've figured out how to not collapse on the most used areas it'd be great.

We're remodeling and replacing bedding room by room. Your recommendation is timely and I'm very interested in the model you got.

    Thanks for the write up!

APC - Agreed. We'll still end up flipping ours every year anyways as I don't believe that's possible either. It's gravity and suspended weight and the last time I checked, they create metal fatigue. Whatever, it's a nice idea and it's certainly made 100x better than the old mattress in regards to construction so I'm happy.

Good luck in the remodel and just for cat's sake, let me know what you end up buying.

TLW and I will be in the market for a new mattress in about a month....our current one is 18 years old and it's horrible. The best mattress that I've slept on was at a Westin Hotel (@BWI, actually)...I think I actually had sex with it. I've also slept on a Sleep Number bed at a Radisson for a couple of days. Hated it. There is an unmistakable divide in the middle and the pump kicks on at random times which is annoying. I just wasn't impressed. I'm interested in the foam mattresses but, one, Tempurpedic is ridiculously expensive and I've heard a lot that it traps your body heat. I can't stand being hot so I'm dubious at best.

Thanks guys, I've got a couple new models to check out...

its hard to flip a pillow top...seems like almost all beds now dont need to be flipped.

Ours doesnt, but we have turned it before (moved the head of the bed to the foot of the bed).

When we did that, it killed my back for a couple weeks...and Im only 25. I dont know if it reformed or I got used to it, but it doesnt hurt my back anymore. Good thing...we were really close to buying a new mattress.

Cody - That's why we didn't get a pillow top and even then you can rotate it and you should....as you of course did. I had the same results when we would flip our old mattress...the first few days were awful, then I settled in. The problem was that you shouldn't have to settle into your bed....that means it's time to go.

Troy - The heat issue is the biggest complaint with Tempurpedic but it is the best selling mattress for some 10 years or so. Check out the Simmons NXG which is a direct competitor model and addresses the heat issues by using a different design in conjunction with coils. It's a more advanced version of what we bought and has more foam layers, shorter coils. The price is about the same and not completely outrageous as the TP.

I only know this crap because I seriously researched all of these brands and concepts since this is what I'm going to be sleeping on for the next 10 years and it's not just a car. You can't return a mattress and while you can add a topper and other things to make it softer, the core is still the core and if you don't really put some effort into this purchase, you're plucked.

The Russell Square Luxury Firm. Absolutely.

Like you, I did a lot of research first, then went to the stores to try them out. Five or ten minutes of laying on a mattress doesn't tell you all, but you get a real good idea of what you don't want, real fast. It seems to me that with the better mattress's, the makers have really stepped up their game.

It's bad, but not that bad. There are some awful sites out there when it comes to marketing and snake oil, but Machina Dynamica is at the top of the list. It has to at least be in the top two or three.

Just get a mattress pad. It will avoid the trapped heat problem, as well as protect your expensive mattress. That's what I use with my Tempurpedic and I don't have a problem with trapped heat. I sweat a lot when I sleep, so it's a requirement in my book anyway.

Prior to and after my back surgeries, I was on a misson. I am convinced that my lack of sleep was due more to the type of mattress that I was sleeping on than my actual injury. The wife and I went from pillow top to traditional. The illow top sucked for me but my wife liked it. The traditional was just "meh" for both of us. we finally settled on a foam mattress. It isn't a tempurpedic (no matter what I cannot fathom spending 5k on a mattress) so we got a knock off of the tempurpedic. It still cost some coin, but it suits us both very well. It is firmer than you would expect so it supports my back and my wife likes the fact that it doesn't disturb her when I toss and turn. It absorbs the motion and very little is transferred so the whole bed doesn't move with me. Our next purchase might be coming with an expected move and I am going to look long and hard at the sleep number beds. I think thats the best thing for us considering her liking soft and me liking firm.

I have a TempurPedic Cloud Luxe. It is supose to be the softest bed they make. I absolutly love it. It reminds me of a water bed that is filled with a gel, and it suports you well enough that your back doenst curve. It is slightly warmer than the spring mattress we had before. A spring mattress is some what hollow in the middle where the memory foam mattress is a solid block, so by its build design it is going to hold more heat in. We do use a nice mattress pad and it made it much better.

You get a better exercise in bed with a foam mattress because you have no spring assist.

I've been sleeping on a Beautyrest Black for about 4 years now and have NEVER flipped the mattress. In fact, you cannot flip it over! The bottom of the mattress is not the same as the top.

I have rotated (head to to) the mattresses as a matter of fact, but I do that about once a year. The mattress is extremely comfortable and well worth the $5K I think I paid for the king set.

I have a buddy who bought the sleep by number. The problem with those beds are that your body heat expands the air mattress and actually causes the mattress to get firmer in the middle of the night. The mattress doesn't outgas (perhaps you or the wife do) to compensate for increased pressure so he ended up adjusting it all the time.

I like the series name, but the mattress names all sound like strippers.......that actually might work to one's advantage i suppose......I would definitely make sure you don't call out your mattress' name in the middle of the night.....that would be awkward.

Check the suggestions on rotating etc. I have a mattress that has different stiffness coils throughout the mattress so if it's rotated it wouldn't feel right. Also, I'm all about pillow tops and I feel like I'm sleeping on an effing cloud (angel that i am and all).

Got one of these memory foam mattress toppers instead of getting a new mattress:

    http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Studio-2-Inch-Ventilated-Mattress/dp/B000LQD88E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320518106&sr=8-1

My bed is about about 15 years old and was very firm originally. The bed actually felt like it got firmer over the years to the point where sleeping on it was getting pretty close to the same as sleeping on the floor. It was causing pain in my lower back and hips for the last several months. Two days of sleeping on the mattress topper and the pains went away. Not at all hot either. Wish I'd got it sooner.

I'll probably get a new bed in a couple years though. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I'll probably get a new bed in a couple years though. Thanks for all the suggestions!

    Same here!!!
I had a high quality mattress just starting to show it's age so we looked around. During this time, we slept at a Holiday Inn and the bed was a mattress with a foam topper. Slept great and we also noticed our hips feeling great the next few days.

Last winter we saw Kohls had some on sale in the middle of the isle. Another woman there with her little son was looking into buying a newer pillow for them selves. Us too, a pillow at first but by the time we left..

The woman and son bought pillows and toppers for each....The 3" version though.

My wife and I each bought new memory foam pillows and a 2" topper.

Our daughter was with us and she to bought a new memory foam pillow and a 2" topper for her high quality mattress we bought her 17 years ago.

I don't know about the lady and her son but we love the toppers so far. No heat and shifting isn't that bad at all. The 3" might be another story for heat though.

The memory foam pillow I did not like. It's to compressive for my bad neck. It felt firm and all but it just doesn't work for my head BUT I do use it for an arm support since I'm a side sleeper and it is pretty cool feeling also. I can flip it over if I'm slightly overheated and it feels cool again and the other warm side is really not that hot or warm to even have to flip it but I do sometimes anyway.

You have to have a high quality base for the foam toppers I believe.

    Good luck to all.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
