Do you guys with huge digitally based collections back it up or just not worry about it?

This. Nearly all of my data, including music, has two backups. The original's are on my main PC (laptop), and are backed up to my server regularly. Those are then backed up every so often to an external RAID array that is normally kept offline. The reason for keeping it offline is to further reduce risk of data loss due to file corruption or power fluctuations. The only exception to this backup strategy is my video's due to the large size of HD files; the originals are on my server, and are backed up to the external RAID array.

I have ripped everything to lossless and have set up my old iBook as a music server running PureMusic over iTunes, I still have my CD's as a permanent physical backup. I learned the hard way when I foolishly sold all my LP's in 1984 (90% of which had only been played once). I'd kill to have those back now.

I'm sorry, but I find that reason a poor excuse. They don't take up all that much space.

More than likely this "NO MORE CDS" crap is just a ploy by the record companies and the RIAA to pump up CD sales.
