transformers

hi,
I've just bought a psw505 from the U.S. and I'm trying to set it up in Hong Kong. does anyone know the in's and out's of transformers that will keep the sub going on a power supply of 220V 50hz here in Hong Kong? is it as simple as getting a step up transformer larger than the max rating of the sub or is it more complicated than that?
i'm running the 505 through a Denon 1912. has anyone heard of swapping out power supplies in the sub itself? or maybe it's as easy as a switch inside the box somewhere?

any help would be great!

thanks,

Dave

    Hello Dave,
Welcome to Polk's forum. You'll need a "step down" transformer that will convert 220VAC to 110VAC, the operating frequency isn't a problem. Are there other components that you have the same issue with? Or, just the sub?
    Regards, Ken

    Thanks!
No, the receiver is from hong kong as are the other speakers. How large of a transformer do I need? The sub is 300W contiinuous and 460w max. Will a 500w transformer be enough? I heard I should get 40-50% larger than max rated power.
    Thanks again!

It would be best to check with Polk's CS at 1-800-377-7655 or send an email to kjasper@polkaudio.com. He'll know the current rating of sub's bass amp protection fuse and help you determine the power demand of the sub. The Forum's own member, "NAP" was the go-to-guy for all things relating to sub amps.
How's the food in Hong Kong?
    Cheers, Ken

I've sent them an email yesterday and waiting for a reply. Do they usually respond quickly?

Food is not bad here although I do miss the grub in the states.

It might be a good idea to send a copy of your email to the address I gave above, that's the CS manager.

Well I guess I'm going to go out and get a 500 watt transformer. Polk tech support says it should work but they're unsure about the frequency change from 50 to 60 hz.

Has anyone actually run a sub through a transformer?

The operating frequency won't make a difference, the sub's power supply converts the incoming AC to DC. I imagine a power supply that used a "pi" type filter, tuned to 60Hz, could be slightly effected, but that's not a problem here. You should be fine, lots of people do exactly what you're doing with no problem.

That's good to hear! Tried to set it all up today and the problem I'm having now is that when I plugged the 500 watt transformer in the wall and turned it on (with nothing else plugged to it yet) it turned on for a second and then shut down! Their is a 5 amp fuse in the box that I think blew but I don't know why. I hope I can get this sorted out!!

That is quite unusual, I would contact the store where you bought it before plugging it in again.

You should be fine. I would check the breaker the transformer is plugged into. I'm in Japan and use a step up transformer since they use 100v 60HZ. I have not had any issues with my gear and I have been using it this way for about 5-6 yrs or so. All my gear is from the USA including power amps, and receiver. You should be fine.

    Hi there,

I'm about to have the same problem as you (using 220V 50Hz, then step down to 110V 50Hz).
Not sure how things sort out? I would like to know.

    Thanks,
    Bob
