If your going to lease a car, forget about fooling around with tuneing it, you'll void the warranty. Don't take this personally, just an observation. I see in your budget, you have $85 for phone, really ? Drop it down to just phone and text and you could cut that in half. Netflix....lose it, XM....lose it too. Bag the lunch, and alltogether your saving a good chunk of change every month. Given your income, you have to put priority to certain things with a dependable car at the top of that list. Those small changes I suggested will get you there to ownership instead of leasing.

If your monthly repair bill is more than a car payment would be...then I'd consider a new car.

I'm of the opinion that leasing is generally a bad idea.

That said, if your income is 12K a year....I think a Honda or a Toyota is a great idea. Well made and nearly indestructable. That said, if I was in your situation, I'd be looking possibly a little older and maybe just a plain jane model. The bells and whistles are cool but in the end, a Civic is a Civic....

I'd recommend a Mini Cooper. I've got an S model & it gets great mileage, has been trouble free & is a complete kick in the pants to drive.

    Just a thought.

I mentioned in a previous post that I was not a fan of hatchback, I am glad to see nice comments about the Honda Civic. I am hoping to have enough saved up to toss a huge chunk down. For now though, I will continue to run my Grand Am.
    Thanks for the help.

I am glad to see nice comments about the Honda Civic.

    Not all are nice.

"Like the new Jetta, the latest Civic was designed only for the U.S. market. The 2012 redesign plummeted in Consumer Reports scores from one of the best small cars to one of the worst, Fisher says. Its nimble handling was replaced with a ?soggy? suspension, and braking distances are too long. The interior quality also declined, with lots of hard plastics throughout the cabin."

Forget the modding part. Either budget for for flash and go up front, or don't go there.
Every dollar you spend on mods is a dollar you won't get back. At least not on a Honda.
There's always Hyundai if you don't have the cash for a new Honda.
But it's all math at this point. You know the budget for gas and car-crunch the numbers
for how much car and how many MPG for the miles you drive. Then find the ones that fit.
At my age, buying the car I want is easy. The hard part is giving up on the old one before
it's circled the earth a couple more times.

My kids both have owned and only drive Honda or Acura so I have become fond of them myself.

The one word of caution on the hot rod ones like the SI is theft.

    Keep that in mind.

My youngest has had a 94 GSR and 2001 RSX Type S stolen, unfortnately he now drives a 2003 S2000 with hardtop and all the goodies. Another stolen car in the making.

Yeah, I am well aware of the theft factor.
As for the number crunching, I will do that after winter subsides, at that point I will know if I can get it, or if I have to wait another year, which is fine.
By the time winter is over, they will be dropping the new 2013 on the lots, so I hear.....
