I have a pair of RTA-12s that I've been meaning to experiment with. One such experiment is to try a compression driver and horn or waveguide with an active crossover and bi-amping. Has anybody ever tried this?
Make it Funky! :)

Why do this  You're talking about ruining a very nice pair of speakers.

Why not just build another pair of speakers? You'll only ruin a great speaker with a compression driver and waveguide.

may I echo the "why?" question? What is one trying to fix on the Polk?
There are speakers that can benefit from "fixing"; the vintage Polk Monitor series don't fall into that camp, at least for me.

With the crossover and tweeter mounted the way they are I wouldn't really have to damage the speakers. I could easily bypass the xo and tweet, and I already have the other parts laying around. It might sound like crap and might not but it seems like it would be a fun project.

The top mounted Xovers for these polk carry signals for the tweeters as well as one of the 6.5" midwwoofers, which receives a different part of the frequency range than the other MW. Unless you have the early model RTA 12's, what it sounds like you're planning will prevent one of the MW's from receiving a signal.
