Speaker set up/Pops and Bursts

I have two questions about the recommended set up of my RM6200's and PSW 350.

1) My speakers are hooked up to an Onkyo 595 receiver. When I set the receiver to no subwoofer, I am unable to set the front speakers at all (large/small). The receiver only allows me to program the center and rear speakers. If I set the receiver to subwoofer/yes, I am allowed to program all speakers. I currently have my system set up to the recommended way suggested by Polk. All speakers work fine. I am wondering if this is normal with this receiver or did I goof somewhere in setting things up.

2) When I have my sub set to auto and I am watching TV or a VHS tape, I can hear occasional "bursts" or "pops" of sound. I have noticed that if I set the sub to the always on position, I do not have that problem. Is this normal or have I goofed somewhere.

Thanks for your reply.

    1) i am not that familiar with the onkyo as to why it would not allow you to not set the fronts when you have the sub turned to off, unless it's default is to set them to large automatically, since it would have nowhere else to send the LFE signal. (i would consult your manual to see if it says something along these lines) if you do have your sub turned 'on', set your fronts to 'small'

2)does this burst/pop only happen when you first turn on the TV/VCR??

    No...The burst/pop occurs during the show/movie

the psw350, when set on auto on/off mode, will automatically shut off after no LFE signal is sent over 15 minutes. it will turn back on when it recieves it's next signal. when watching TV and your VCR, there is probably not a low enough frequency sound being sent to the sub every 15 minutes, so the pop/bursts you may be hearing could be the sub powering off and on as it does/does not recieve a signal. do you have it directly hooked to your recivever LFE line-out when this problem occurs? if so, i would say this is all it is, especially because you don't hear it when the sub perfroms fine with it set to always on. hope this helps

Thats what I thought, not enough low frequency sound.

As far as the LFE line out, I run speaker wires from receiver to sub then from sub to Fronts. I have noticed the LFE area. Do I need to hook that up as well?

if you have speaker wire running from the reciever to the sub and then to the front's, you don't need to do anyhting with the LFE inputs. these are there if your reciever has a LFE out, and you can run one line direct to the sub(rather than running the speakers). it is usualy pre-filtered in the reciever though, the way you have it wired now is the 'preffered' method for wiring.
