embedded in wall speakers (not in-wall speakers)
i am finishing my basement, and the wall where i may put the tv/reciever/fronts/woofer is backed by a staircase with a closet underneath - ie there is 3 feet of unutilized open space behind the wall..
to minimize floor clutter, i know i can do in wall speakers. however, given the empty closet space, i wonder if i can embed the speakers in the wall itself. for example, if i have a large traditional subwoofer, can i cut the back of the wall and slide the woofer back in it so the front if flush with the wall? same question for front left/right speakers. i'm assuming that regular woofers/speakers sound much better than the inwall variety, so embedding these since i have this unutilized space could be an option. thoughts?

I've seen it done on $$$$$$ surround systems in magazines over the years.

What speakers are you gonna use? Bookshelf or floorstanding?

I would probably use bookshelf vs floorstanding. Haven't picked the exact speakers - any suggestions.
what sort of DSP / equalization would you recommend? Since any ports out the back of the speaker will be in the staircase area, i'm sure some sort of adjustment will be necessary. -
A receiver or pre/pro with Audyssey.
