Surely I can't be the only one here who enjoys listening to metal on my Polks. Metal is a demanding genre to reproduce accurately. What are your favorite metal records? I'll go first:

1. Painkiller by Judas Priest
2. Slaughter of the Souls by At the Gates
3. Keeper of the Seven Keys pt. 2 by Helloween
4. Wages of Sin by Arch Enemy
5. Cowboys from Hell by Pantera

What do you say? What are you blastin'?

Sooo...just to clarify here - is this a post to get recommendations for metal cds that sound good - not just what metal groups folks like?

cuz I would agree, there are metal cds that sound horrific when cranked.

Hockeyboy....surprised you put the new In Flames CD in your list. While I would not have it in my top five, it is a great CD from them. Love it!

I see that Operation Mindcrime is showing a trend here. It is truly "The Wall" of the heavy metal world. One of my favorite albums of any genre of all time.

It's not for me! I just can't get into that 240 bpm drummer with a singer that sounds like he has a hair ball stuck in his throat. I've played guitar in bands on and off since I was 17, 40 now. And I always wondered how those bands (death metal, black metal whatever) could make money sounding like that. Pretty much sounds like a lot of noise to me. But apparently there is a crowd that likes it. My oldest brother (43) is into that stuff. He has been playing drums since age 15 or so, played in cover bands for years. Can play YYZ by Rush and not miss a beat. But he would rather play that death metal stuff for some reason.

Granted I listen to very little of the "WHAT I CALL METAL" now days but I have to have my fix now and then..

FTR I don't look at TOOL, NIN ect.. as METAL. I don't see where they fall into be labled as Metal..

    Black Metal (Death etc.)
    Thrash Metal (Anthrax etc.)
    Heavy Metal (Judas Preist etc.)
    Speed Metal (Slayer etc.)
    Hair Metal (Poison etc.)

    Please add..

Very odd statement coming from a musician, in terms of grouping into a single genre and generalizing like that.

I'd encourage anyone who feels that way to check out someone like Opeth. It's my opinion of course, but I think that some of the best songwriting of any genre in the last decade has come from that band. The Drapery Falls is a great song and is probably the best song in their catalog in terms of illustrating what they're about, in case anyone wants to check it out.

That being said, Opeth is the only death metal band that I listen to, and I use that category only because it's the one most commonly attached to them.

Unless that is a loaded response and you are mad at my reply to you in that other thread. My statement above is not odd at all. I listen to a little of everything, except rap. I love heavy metal, but that raspy singer and runaway drums and guitars those types bands write is not for me. That is pretty simple to understand I think. TFL understood it.

How is that an odd statement? If I were to say that I don't care for the sound of Martin Logan speakers....would that be an odd statement to you?

Of course not, you're absolutely welcome to like what you want. if you were to say, all electrostats sound the same and I don't like any of them, that would sound a bit odd.

I wasn't attacking you or your tastes, I was arguing against dismissing an entire genre of music.

I was using it as a chance to point out someone like Opeth, who is Death metal but does not fit in the picture that you painted.

If the bands singer growls on every song. Every song sounds the same. Yeah, easily dismissed by me. I am headed to the Tube to check out Opeth right now! Any recommendations?

Check out The Drapery Falls. You will know if you like them or not with that song, and your opinion likely won't change with other material as it's the perfect representation of them.

That's always how I see them listed, but they are definitely more progressive. Maybe if there is a category for progressive death metal they'd be the poster child, but I'm not sure such exists.

It's semantics really, just wanted to throw them out there as something to check out, they do have the growler but don't fit the typical mold of what people call death metal.
