Sorry Daboyz....totally thought this was in the Clubhouse.
BACK TO REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
These are still here folks.
-
C'mon folks. Listened to these again yesterday for a little while. Sound as great as ever. Someone needs these.

These look great...
-
Thanks orangey,they do.

Mark these as sold, too. Thanks so much!!

Well there is no denying these sound spectacular! Even the wife said" WOW those sound great!"
Daboys is a great guy to work with, with stellar communication every step of the way. Well described and honest seller.
Now ...LOL I'm not sure who veneered these gems but they need to go back to wood identification school to be sure. The veneer was replaced with mahogany not oak?... Honduras Red Mahogany to be exact. It's a descent contrast with the oak but not even a close match in color or grain which was a bit disappointing to me. As I compare the pics from the OP it's more evident of the mismatch but I didn't notice it the first time. The IC is bitchin'! and from the sound of things the xovers are equally well built. Grill cloth is in great shape but the side panels have fallen off and will need to be re glued (we both saw the panel shift at the exchange, I'm sure, and I had no issue then or now). Excellent time for a Gorilla Glue commercial.
All in all, sound is where its at and these definitely hit the mark in that area. The cosmetics are tolerable as they are headed to the bedroom anyway and the lights are dim in there :twisted:He He!
Gonna be nice to put a tube on these ones to be sure.
Thanks Dave!

So be it. No offense intended but it is what it is and oak and mahogany are way! way! different. It may have been the intention at the time but honestly that doesn't seem real logical.
Again, Thanks Dave for an awesome transaction. When the 7x400 arrives and is in place A BBq might be in order eh?
Thanks 1CToo much **** to list.... -
Dan is a really great guy and all went very well. There was a lift in the side panel but it wasn't anything major that seemed to be a worry for either of us. The color is the color. There are so many shades of oak that I guess I never really paid that much attention to them. I never really worried about them matching up to anything.
As said the proof is in the pudding and these are a spectacular sounding pair of speakers. I tried to tell ya'll.
You can thank ALL212 for the work on the crossovers. He did a wonderful job. Will be nice to break bread and have a couple brews and hear them again. -
Hearing them now! Man Oh Man! The ears are lovin it! It's going to be fun to compare after rebuilding the Xover's in my studios. I guess I'll have to find a channel the dog likes during the day cause now I have two sets to break in hehe
Thanks Dave,

Hey SDA 1C,
I am having my SDA 1C's modded by Trey and he is using Clarity Caps (ESA and PX) and Mundorf resistors. What Clarity caps are in these?
I would love to hear what you think the differences between these modded 1C's and your Studios are. What caps andresistors are you planning on using when you do the Studio's??I got static in my head
The reflected sound of everything -
I bought Gimpod's list to the letter (http://www.gimpod.com/parts1c.html). Sonicaps and Mills. I understand the xover in the ones I just picked up arent broke in yet so I'm not sure its a fair run nor do I have the comparison ready as the parts have not yet arrived. Well some of them have but not all so....I also haven't opened the new set up so I couldn't tell you what series are in them. Daboys might be able to assist on that info.
When I have the Studios upgraded you can bet I'll be comparing them:cheesygrin: and by that time I should be able to compare on ss and tube, a/b same pre, same source.. Another thing to consider is though I am aware of the "which mod made the most difference" thing, I will be making full mod upgrades (everything shy of the cabinet reenforcements) at one time so I will only be able to compare finished product but I bet that's going to be close enough.
I did go with a descent binding post as opposed to the Rat Shack version but Sonically I'm not holding a bunch of weight there. Also, I bought the Cardas grnd for the IC and will be using the Silver Teflon coax as well as the good naners. The IC that came with the new set is like! WOW! I only wish it was banana instead of rca but oh well right. The studios will have the bananas.
I would say at this point the most notable advantage the Wood clad set has is weight of cabinet. Even if both sets were modded with like parts there would be the density thing to consider. Nearly 2x the weight so there has got to be some extra dampening effect realized there.
I'll add my perspective as I gather info and of course critical listening time (WHAT?! I COULDN"T HEAR YOU I WAS>>>lol) anyway...LOL

They are oak... I got the veneer from Menards, and applied a light cherry before I applied the oak finish by mistake. I can also say that I never will buy veneer from anyone other than a specialized source after my experience with the material I got from them. What do you think of the side panels? Stock, the grill-cloth covered the entire side of the speaker. I thought they looked pretty good, so I left them that way. There is an old thread around here somewhere that shows the rebuild. The Gear... I like that they are split on the side between wood and grill cloth. I think it adds depth to the overall visual effect. Believe me friend, the veneer is mahogany no matter what the label said. Oak is hardwood, mahogany is soft wood. The fingernail test doesn't lie even if the appearance might confuse some. I don't aim to change them and I love the sound. I say again lol That IC is Bad ****! lol. I'll be building another for my studios
