RTI A's are great movie speakers. RTI = Reference Theater Improved. The speaker size more depends on how large of room you have and how much power you plan to throw at them.
The A7's and 9's really shine with an external amplifier. They can also be ran pretty well by a hefty avr. You will still need a sub for hometheater use. I ran my RTI A7's off of a Onkyo TX-NR808 wich is rated at 135 watts per channel (2 channels driven). They sounded great. When I added my amplifer the sound improved especially at high volume levels. They sound clean, it doesnt start to sound rough or bad (clipping / distortion) with the volume cranked up to referance level.
The RTI A5's would be nice if you just plan on running a mid powered avr. Something in the 75-100 wpc range. The RTI A5's are closer to a book shelf RTI A3' than the RTI A7 towers.
Ethire way get the best subwoofer you can afford. The Polk DSW Pro 660WI is a heck fo a sub and would be good with any of the RTI

a7's are great for movies. bookies can be great too just like JB said room size ect all play a factor. If you can tell us more about the size of the room, other gear, budget ect that will help in picking stuff out. Also if you run a sub a bookshelf can be crossed over to take the strain of the low end off of it and run to a sub. also if the room is small a bookie would be easier to fit into it as well, just all depends on what you want ect.

+1 think you should buy at a minimum is one that has Amplifier Pre Outs. That way later on you can add an external amp. There should be a lot of good options in your price range.
I run an Onkyo TX-NR808. I like it a lot. There is one bad thing about them though. They used a bad cable from the font pannel to the circuit board. This can cause random changing of surround modes, or video input modes. I had mine due this for a day. I called Onkyo and they sent a shipping box with supplies and a pre paid shipping envelope. The repair took about 2-2.5 weeks turn around time. I would have no problem buying another Onkyo AVR. Onkyo also will cover the problem weather it is in or out of warrenty.
You can get a refurbished one from accessories 4 less at a pretty steep discount. Since it is a refurb chances are it has already had the cable issue fixed.
TX-NR808 is $499 or you can get a year newer (2011 current model) but a step down in the seires TX-NR709 for $489.
The TXNR809 is $679 Or you can go a step up and a year older to the TX-NR1008 for the same price.
I would probably get the TX-NR809 though. The 2011's have a wireless module you can add on to have wireless networking. The older TX-NRxx8's you have to hook them up with a ethernet cable. You can buy a wirelss bridge to use with the older ones though.
Pioneer and Yamaha are some other good highly recomended avrs as well.AVR: Onkyo Tx-NR808

cstmar01, what speakers are you running for your xpa-2. I'm thinking of an xpa-2 for my lsi-15s fornts, and an xpa-5 for my lsi center and fxi15s for surrounds and rears. This will be my very first time delving into high-end audio gear and I've been looking and researching a long time at audio amps there is so many to choose from. Please share your opinion.
