A short stay in your public library's reference section should give you all recent and past Consumer Reports issues and buying guides.

I don't look at CR anymore...

My self and my parents used to make nearly every major purchase through it, untill recently.

All of the stuff either broke in a year or it was terrible out of the box, and all of it was "Top Rated" by CR.

My opinion is that they basically sell a "Top Rating" at this point.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of CR either. I prefer to look at reviews from those who actually use the product on a daily basis - the consumers. Amazon is a good place to start for that, and for computer items, Newegg. Don't just look at the percentage of good and bad reviews, you actually need to read them. This is especially the case with 1 and 2 star reviews; many times you find out the rating/review isn't really even valid. Sometimes they will complain about the seller or shipping, both of which are irrelevant to the product. Other times it can be very clear that it is a case of user error versus a problem product.

Yes, this will be done as well. Consumer Reports will be used as a guide, unfortunately these days there is a lemon in anything you buy. Cheers.

How do we know it's the compressor? It could just be the overload relay on the compressor terminals. Or the capacitor.
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

See #14, it is a relay switch of some sort. At first I thought that was good news, but here we are sitting with a non working fridge still!! Repairman was at our house LAST Tuesday and diagnosed the problem with his miracle ears(as he performed no tests, etc) and stated he needed to order the switch and to call him when it arrives....huh? This switch was to be ordered??...I would have thought something small like this and a part that was previously faulty and effected a recall notice(which we never got) would have been a part that he would have had at his shop!

This guy has not returned any of my calls and last night I spoke with Lowes warranty people that are supposed to get to the bottom of this and call me today....we'll see. Over 10 days now living out of a cooler...I should just pitch a tent in the yard since camping is when I use the cooler anyways.

10 days ?? Wtf ?? I'd be on the phone raising hell. If it's such a small part, go pick it up yourself from a supplier.....tell them you work for an online appliance review site and this isn't sitting well with you.

Check to see if you have a "Tribbles" appliance parts store near you, they'll probably have the part in stock. Our last fridge needed a thermo reset breaker (klixon) which was gotten at our Tribbles store for approx. $12.00 IIRC. Below are what various configs these can come in.

Just off the phone with the Lowes service center...no farther ahead than before...it will be 3 to 5 business days, etc.
Placed a call to the store manager and he's supposed to look into this and get back to me tonight. Even if I could get the part I'm not really sure what it is nor have I ever worked on a fridge besides installing some door seals. The point is, I should not have to do that esp since I paid for an extended warranty. I think if nothing else they are going to get a bill from me for food loss.

Bought my Sub-Zero almost 15 years ago and got a pretty good deal on her. She's a tank, never any repairs except for a bad light switch. And the beer is still mighty cold.:cheesygrin:

Not sure what your point is. I have a Kenmore, freezer on the bottom, made by Whirlpool. Bought in 1999, and it's never needed any repairs, not even a new light bulb. All brands have lemons though.

Do I need to have a point? My beer is cold, probably colder than yours.

Well, local store manager called to let me know that the warranty dept. has escalated this to their management...whatever that means. Yesterday Lowes called to let us know they are looking into the problem....no word since. If this means they are trying to call the repair guy...good luck! He has not returned any of my 7 phone calls.
Warranty dept. won't hand this off to another repair person since they shows parts have been shipped.
I think it's time for me to visit Lowes and get a copy of their extended warranty conditions and perhaps see my atty...good grief!
