HK-730 Short Review

So I fetched my CRS speakers out of the closet and hooked them up to the fairly heavy duty spring clip connectors on the back of my newly acquired Harmon Kardon HK-730 receiver. Backwards. Not really paying attention, I hooked the right channel speaker up to the right set of connectors, and the left to left. Wrong. Counter-intuitively, the connector pairs are reversed on the back panel. Plainly marked, but ignored by me.

After reversing my mistake, I listened and could not believe the quality of sound produced by this receiver. The CRS's were hitting low notes like never berfore - even as they were pulled away from the rear wall by about 2 feet. Quick, punchy bass. Mids and highs were smooth but also very articulate. Lots of detail. And bare in mind, this is through an old Onkyo 6 disc changer with cheap ICs and Walmart speaker cable. (not proud, but...) I am very impressed by this HK.

Will try it on the SRS2's later and report back.

Out of curiosity, to what amplifier's LF performance are you comparing the CRS bass vis-a-vis your comment above?

An Acurus A-200 matched with an Audiolab 8000Q preamp.

Ya know, I'll be the first to admit that I have a spec bias. IOW, an amp's spec sheet is something I pay close attention to if I am considering it for my system. Well, those days are over. I hooked the HK receiver up to the SRS2s and was completely blown away. This thing had the same neutral to warm mids and clarity as my Acurus/Audiolab equipment - PLUS it probably went another half octave lower in the bass. And I am talking quality bass - quick tight and punchy.

Now I am completely re-evaluating my system as far as amplification. Man this is a fun hobby!
