I usually play it at about 1/3 up to 1/2 on the dial between the hours of 7-11pm most nights.

My volume knob just keeps turning!!

But I usually settle for anywhere between -20 to -5. -2 to 0 are for showing off... and even THAT'S too loud.

I think 85-90db is good for someone with good (normal) hearing.
I tend to run at 95-100 due to spending much of 10 years at the soundboard of a band and also going to about a thousand live shows without ear protection.

Well, not if you calibrate to reference level with an SPL meter so 0 = 105dB/115dB LFE.

My normal listening level is about -15dB, which means peaks of 90dB from the main channels and 100dB from the LFE channel. But sometimes, that gets bumped up a bit if I'm showing off a good action flick.

That level means absolutely nothing to anyone else. Generally, for dedicated listening at a distance of approximately 8 feet from speakers I keep it in the 70+db range, with dips into the 60s and peaks into the 80s. Once you consistently get into the 80s and higher you have lost the ability to have a conversation without shouting.

While that would make them the same level at 0 db, they would still differ at any other setting including -15 db. Different rooms, speaker efficiencies, amp gain, etc.

Same here, when I'm in the mood however, the rule is never above 1/2 otherwise its time to replace the amp!

During serious music listening I don't care for conversation. Back ground music is ok during social gathering but I tend to avoid as it often gets me in trouble (tend to focus on the music ratter than conversation). Sure, go db rating, very fancy and cool tecky talk but means d***k unless we are all using same amp, same room environment and we all have equal hearing. I still wonder how accurate the db rating is on the dial (of most gear) anyway...

Huh? I think most of us who cited db levels were referring to measured levels with an SPL meter.

Exactly. 70db is 70db irrespective of the room, the amp, whatever. Also, unless you are a hermit, at some point you will be asked a question and need to answer. If you are in to 80, 90, 100+ db range you will either have to turn the music down, or shout. WHAT DID YOU SAY DEAR? TURN THE MUSIC DOWN A$$HOLE.

The db number on a dial means nothing. Some even go to 11.

Apparently some people know d!(k about sound.

No... that's the whole point of calibrating relative volume so that 0 = 105dB. You're calibrating around the room, speaker efficiencies, amp gain, etc. so that when you turn the volume down -15dB from that reference, it's a linear control.

Regardless, I just realized we were talking about music here, which makes this question kinda' hard to answer... considering all you can really say is "loud" unless you're actually pulling a SPL meter out and taking an average.

Most of the time I listen at slightly higher than moderate levels.
But when drinking and ping pong is involved, the volume level is proportionate to the number of beers consumed

As a personal example of how the volume setting really means nothing in regard to the sound level, when I first bought my current two channel system I only had one amp. In stereo mode it makes 350w/channel @ 4 ohm. With this I used to keep the pre-amp around -25db to produce the sound level (70db range) I use for classical music. Later, I bought another amp, and put both into bridged mono mode. In this configuration, each one is rated at 800w/ch at 4 ohm. Now, the pre-amp is set at -45db to produce the same SPL levels as before.

It depends on the mood for laid back listening on the upstairs system -15dbs will do me fine those Polk's sound pretty sweet at that level, when it comes to the down stairs systems, that's when its time to get LOUD I usually turn the dial to around 10 or 11 o clock, and put those Acoustic Research's to work more than that, and the towns finest would show up at the door, so be it. I must restrain myself to 11 o clock.
